Used cars are always sold *as is* so I'm not surprised the sellers don't feel they have to rectify it. You really ought to have made it a condition of the sale that they either replace the housing or discount the car further.

Is the crack bad enough to let water or dust into the tail light?I don't know the roadworthy requirements in the UK but over here if the lens is cracked enough to let dust/water into the unit it is deemed unroadworthy...
