Looks like the updated cee'd is getting a 6 speed manual.  Wonder if its the 'R' Series diesel?

Have a look at the new Sorrento too - 'R' Series 145kW 421Nm - nice

Thanks LDL, was just thinking the other day if a 6 speed would be better or not, like how much weight will that add? and do they fit the extra gear in the same size housing? and would the six speed be as strong as the 5 speed?i just hope with the 6 speed it would mean improved gear ratio's through the gear box not just a gear thats taller than the 5 speed, but would remain to be seen if it helped economy, it should help long liverty specially if you do a lot of speeds up in the 140kph zone.
what size is the sorento motor? whats the economy like?
don't be like the rest that just say "look at the diesels winning over petrol at Le Mans " the reason for that is they allow much larger capacity for forced induction diesel like twice the size of a forced induction petrol, also the fuels they allow with petrol are different than they used to use , more for enviroment that making power. but it's till good as it helps the rest of us long term.
cheers

Hi!
My engine a 2.0 CRDi revs about 2500 rpm at 140 km/h in 6:th gear....
I don't think a engine with a 5 speed gearbox revs much higher in 5:th gear...
My first gear has a very very low ratio... Can be good if you towing a caravan but not for normal use... So i often start in second gear...

The new gearbox has slitly shorter ratios than the 2000cc engine. If is very good!

The 2010 Ceed will feature a 1.6diesel engine with 180bhp!!!!!

Do you have a link?

I just checked out those two links at caradvice... the Sorrento looks and sounds ok (apart from that new Kia Corporate grill  :P)

Don't like the new styling of the kia ceed and don't like the red back lighting either.. (hope the i30 gets that 6 speed box though)

you get excited very easy mate, not enough power to get excited about just name it in the numbers and measurement we use here now KW and whats the economy like?

Current engines haver 90 and 115Bhp, that is around 66Kw and around 85Kw.
The new generation engines are ~105Kw and ~137,5Kw.

On a 1600cc block is very impressive and a reason to be excited about.
Fuel economy... I don't know, but it is always directly dependent on the weight of your right foot! :)

Yeah, really really impressive power from a 1,6 L diesel engine.....

Where's this thread heading?

I'm getting lost ...

Isn't 180bhp impressive for a 1.6L diesel?

It would be if it were true. I find it highly unlikely that a low emission, road legal 1.6 diesel could output 180BHP. Possibly a misquoted torque value of 180 lb/ft perhaps? Or, more likely, the petrol engine option.

the numbers are good but it is forced induction, the motor would be heavier too would have to be . what is the TQ numbers? and at what rev's.

Lakes,
you find some weird issues!!! heavier? why? It has the same distribution, same capacity, etc!
Torque? It is directly dependent of Bhp, i think it might produce around 340-350Nm, that is what that amount of power would produce on the current engine.
I suspect it will be intriduced a bigger turbo (currently it is a GT1544VB), I think it will be a GT1749VB producing around 1.5 bar of of boost, instead of the current 1.3bar. The new megane produces 1.6 bar of boost... (I know you use Psi, use a unit converter).
And the fuel injection will probably be upgradede to the newer 3rd generation of commonrail, (currently it is the 2nd).

Again, must say.... this is only my suspicion!

i was just expecting it to be beefed up to handle the extra strees if it's not???
i was expecting different turbo too as would need one the one i have looks small, might take longer to make TQ, when i have tuned normally asperated to make more hp i can tune for TQ or i can tune for HP, when i go for all out HP i can loose TQ. don't think it's a by product, but i have been surprised a few time thinking i would loose TQ to gain HP but surprise i got both.

My honest opinion is... it was a mistype, and probably it will be the gasoline engine, not the diesel.... we'll have to wait and see...

could be right, Martin said he could get power like that if he went to a larger turbo, but the 1.6 CRDi is long stroke and diesel so not going to see high rev's.

While I accept that what is available to the general public is NOT leading edge technology, if we assume that the rev values of this hypothetical 187HP engine are similar to the current motor, you are looking at a 65% increase in overall efficiency. The current 113BHP version is just about as efficient as anything else on sale at the moment and to improve on it by that amount would be practically impossible. Improvements in engineering technology are incremental, never sensational. It's simply got to be a misquote by some PR muppet, blindly repeated by ignorant journalists. It's interesting to see that none of these 'magazine' sites have commented on what would be groundbreaking news if the figures they happily quote were true...

It is not impossible to reach those figures!

This is a 1.6HDi engine (PSA Group.. as in peugeot, citroen):

No, it's not impossible to reach those levels of power. It is however, using technologies economic enough for mass production, currently impossible to manufacture such an engine which will also meet world market noise and emission constraints, run on readily available pump fuel, and still be reliable enough to warranty for 5 years.
Current PSA diesels on sale to the general public are no better than Hyundai's with regard to efficiency. In fact, the BMEP of most manufacturers engines are all within a few percent of each other because they are all tied by the same scientific, technological, emission and economic constraints.
I have no doubt that mass produced, 187BHP, 1.6 litre diesels will be available one day but that day has got to be at least 10 years away before their use in competitively priced cars.

Hopefully Hyundai will fairly promptly roll thru these updates to the i30.  I think this is one area where Hyundai seriously lack in - updates to drivetrain - primarily gearboxes.  They have 6 speed autos and manuals available but still throw in 4 speed autos and 5 speed manuals.  5spd manual i can live with but 4spd autos are pretty '80s now.
