There has been a huge rise in the number of motorists buying electric and hybrid cars in 2015, new figures show.

Some 20,992 motorists bought a so-called "plug-in" vehicle between January and September, up 139% on the same period last year.

So still not very many then.  Difficult to get the extra purchase price back from lower fuel costs and if in London avoiding the congestion charge.  Until they get cheaper or the congestion charge rises massively I can't see them making much of a dent in the sales figures.

I could easily manage with an electric car as I very rarely travel more than 20 miles from home but I'd need to be a very 'green' person to spend the extra.  I suspect most fanatical 'greens' would get a bike and use the bus instead of having a car. :)

We do too many long trips to consider a plug-in eventually (especially in Tassie where plugin options will be limited for some time to come)

a hybrid is best compromise for us between purchase cost, range and economy. :goodjob: (or maybe a diesel) :winker:

I seriously considered a Nissan Leaf when the local dealership had competitive PCP offers. Considering the savings on fuel costs it was a no brainer yet range range anxiety meant it wasn't a viable option. I still wonder whether I made a mistake choosing an i30 over the Leaf.*

It'll be interesting to see the effect of the government's 2017 VED reform on sales of hybrids...

There are a few Teslas in Tassie now.  David Walsh (the owner of MONA) has one.

I like them, even though they put me out of a job.

The options we have at the moment are fairly unispiring and not at all cheap.
