A bungling council will pay £60,000 to scrap a controversial bus lane just 21 days after it opened - because it trebled journey times for drivers.

Original plans for the 300 metre-long-bus lane were met with criticism from motorists, who said it would cause even more congestion on a busy city centre road.

But Cornwall Council ignored the feedback and went ahead with the proposal, opening the new lane in Tregolls Road, Truro, Cornwall on November 2.

But camera data gathered by council engineers revealed its introduction increased the time taken to travel the three miles from Tresillian to Truro from seven minutes to 21.

Consultation with other councils could have prevented such a waste and subsequent embarrassment.

They should have put up some temporary bollards to test the idea and measure traffic flow before proceeding. There are plenty of unused bollards on most motorways they could have borrowed.

Looks like he'd have the bottle to lie in a busy road.

Doesn't surprise me in the slightest....We see this sort of thing all the time, and not just for bus lanes...there are also many roads that were once 2 lanes but have now been turned into one so bicycle lanes could be added...or, they'll turn 2 lanes into one just before an intersection, requiring those wanting to turn left to merge into the right hand lane first before being able to make their turn..... and then they wonder why traffic is more congested???  :crazy1: :head_butt:

Bus lanes always make me shake my head.
Limited to buses and taxis they cause more congestion than they solve.
Bus drivers might like them but that'd be about it.
As for changing two lane roads into one, etc, they do that here too if they want to "encourage" drivers to take an alternative route.
It never works.
