Hi guys,

First time here and I don't know if I'm posting in the correct category but here goes. As winter is coming soon, I really need to get this fixed without paying big and going to a dealer. I have a 2008 Hyundai i30 SLX model and the heater is no longer working (both climate control and manual heating control). I have taken it to my mechanic and he had a look at it but isn't sure what the problem is. I looked everywhere and tried researching but I don't know a whole heap about cars.

Basically what happens is that when I put the temperature to 'HI', it doesn't get hot (with and without AC on) and it's still cold. My mechanic said that there's nothing wrong with the heating core as it gets really hot and the thermostat is fine since it shows the temperature. I saw something about an actuator when I researched but can't find anything on the i30 SLX model. Also, the coolant looks pretty full. Would like to get this repaired asap before winter hits! Any ideas?? Photos below:

I don't have hot temperature if I don't put the heater on HIGH...very strange hope someone will help you !

P = Park, it's an auto.

There is no temperature display for the heater. You can dial in the required temp and the auto function should then try to keep that temp in the car.

Are all the vents outputting air at the required settings ie screen, floor face, is fan working at the correct speeds.

Do not use the AC as this will cool the car. Only use the AC in winter to dehumidify the car.

If the engine temp is normal then I think it's the vent changing between hot and cold airflow that doesn't move, there must be an actuator for that..?

Tim (Cruiserfied) mention earlier that on these cars the hot water from the engine always flows into the radiator in the cabin and there's a vent changing the airflow either directly from outside or via the radiator.

I don't know how to access the vent/actuator but maybe @Phil №❶ or @cruiserfied can help here..?

Thank you all for the response and the welcome! Yes, I am in Sydney Australia I do think it could be the vents not moving but no idea how it goes with the electronics since it's a dial to adjust the temperature.

Yeah, I use AC to get rid of the fog on the windscreen. But even when I turn the AC off, it doesn't get hot in the cabin.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

  Jason. Lucky you are in Sydney and not a place that gets really cold!

Tim (Cruiserfied) is an ace Hyundai Tech who gives our members advice where he can. Phil has access to some wiring info. Me, I just make smart arse comments and friendly banter (so I can't help with this one sorry). It was easier in the old days when switching was mechanical (not electronic)

Unfortunately i cant be of much help through a keyboard this time.

I would start with the hot/cold direction actuator . Its buried behind the dash and is difficult to see without removing a few trims. Your mechanic should be able to remove the actuator, leaving it plugged in, and see if it moves with controls. He should also be able to move the direction flap by hand and see if you get hot air from vents.

so it appears that the radiator was pluged by a kinda mud, that maybe was because of a bad cooling liquid, so the cooling circuit was also full of rust...

Is it a possible cause gentlemen ?

Seen it few times. Rusty mud plugs the system. In both cases my friends were lucky. The dirt came out when garden hose was put to spray water against the normal flow direction. Happened because the coolant was not changed when it was supposed to...

Going by the words of his mechanic probably not. Heater core circulation seems to be ok.

Can you here a little motor operating when you turn the heater dial from hot to cold and visa versa? Could possibly be the little motor that shifts the airflow is jammed with or has a loose connection.

I'm not sure where this would be on the i30, but I had an XD Elantra and if you looked under the passenger side of the dash you could see the little arms moving and you changed the controls

Thank you all for your responses! I tried listening to see if a motor moves before but I couldn't hear anything but then again, I don't really know what to look out for and how loud it should be. So possibilities: Motor for the door, actuator, rusty mud plugs, coolant flush?

If you have the car just turned to ignition (no engine running)
- Turn off the fan
- change the air flow direction from (between windscreen, dash vent) you should hear the motor operating).
Now if you change the temp you should hear the same... If you don't... It's a jammed arm of stuff motor
