I have a diesel.  Got my car in for service today and mechanic called my father to say won't be ready until tomorrow as fan belt needs replacing.

I didn't think I had a fan belt??  I know that might sound dumb lol...or am I thinking of something else I don't have compared to petrol cars?

Yes you have a belt as can be seen in the below picture.

If I was doing the belt I would do the tensioners as well, small price to pay to not have them jam and cause the new belt to snap.

You don't have a fan belt as such since it's an electric fan though as Beerman has pictured there is the Serpentine drive belt.

You don't have spark plugs, distributor, coils, high tension electric spark leads. :happydance:

You DO have a lot more torque, which pulls you up hills  :D

So in short - any number of mechanics (and drivers) still call it a 'fan belt' even though the fan is no longer driven by any belt.   Maybe this is a case of old habits die hard; or saying what (most) customers expect to hear and accept without realising the incorrectness of it.

And even when it was driven by a belt - it could have been the same belt that drove other things (as pictured above) or a separate belt from the crank-shaft... yet any belt gets called by some people a 'fan belt' even when no fans are involved.

More correctly they should be called now days 'drive', 'timing' or 'accessory'/'alternator' belt (commonly the alternator will be lumped in with 'accessories' in terms of belt name - even thought is rather crucial... esp. for petrol cars) depending on what there primary function is.

Due to the usual convoluted path, I prefer serpentine belt. As a lad, fan belt meant you'd loose fingers if you went anywhere near there, so it was a safety measure and they did drive fans, too.

Actually that is a good description - I like.  I was just going on the track of naming by the function(s) it performs - but serpentine sounds good.  And gives the idea you might get bitten by it.

so what is the belt driving? then can understand if important like if it breaks can you still drive?
what i'm thinkining i see in picture is it drives alternator and the fuel pump ?

2012 fd diesel says fuel pump driven by drive belt, in my manual.  However, the book must be wrong.  :D

No, the book MUST be wrong.  :)

Cruiserfied is correct, it is driven by a sprocket, linked to the timing chain. The book has jumped to conclusions about how the timing chain is driven, I think.

It's all good, Tim.  :goodjob2:

So on both occasions when I did a belt in the Falcon I immediately knew when the steering got heavy....

How would I know in the i30, I hope it is something more scientific than the temp gage going through the roof???
