Queensland Police have commenced a trial of the Sonata for frontline duties. Seems Toyota have jacked up the price of the Camry in response to the demise of the Commodore and Falcon.

I reckon if Hyundai can jazz up the Veloster they might be onto a winner. If the two door Mustang can be considered (and fail) the three door Veloster could do fine with more power and better brakes.

I think the 2 door Mustang was stupidity. Would be great fun trying to get an arrested person into the back seat with handcuffs on. I dont think the Veloster would make a very good cop car either.
From the Hyundai range Sonata Turbo is where its at for a cop car.

Cheaper to run than the Commodore apparently. Better returns on resale too,

You don't know the traffic branch if you are worried about carrying prisoners. They just call for an Iload or a Sonata......They ran the Monaro a few years ago minus the rear seat, so carrying passengers is not high on the list. Pity the Mustang couldn't last more than 3 minutes in the pursuit test without overheating.....I hear even Dazz lasts longer than that

I'm not a Cop so don't know what Queensland Cop's use these cars for? in NSW looks like they have general duty police cars, Higway patrol, then they have Bull Waggons for picking up bad boys & girls. the Highway Patrol don't have dog cadges in the back like the Yanks use so don't think they put arrested people in them?
When it comes time to Sell I'm sure the ex V8 Holdens & Falcons or turbo six falcons would sell well, & if i was buying i would Buy one of the late model V8 Mustangs!!! but not a ex police Sonarta as i don't know how they would stand up to police work, so i would think resale would be very low harder to sell, what do you think?

Also i doubt the Sonarta could pass the High Speed braking test all highway patrol cars in NSW need. All the Holden & Falcon Highway Patrol cars in NSW for past decade have been fitted with special high performance brake ( probably like the V8 super cars use. So when Holden & Falcon stop production will be very hard to replace in NSW.

Actually, I had a bit more of a think about this with similar fuel economy and 7,500 km service intervals I doubt it. My version of the Commodore appears to be quite popular 2nd hand so resale is holding up quite well too.

Its not the turbo so it will be 15k services. You need to remember that the Commodore won't be available soon, so won't be an option, hence the trial of the Sonata. There aren't too many 4 door sedans getting around any more, and Toyota know it and have put up the fleet price.

I dare say Hyundai is looking to leverage off the success of the iLoad, they also arn't afraid of working with fleets, so are likley to sharpen their pencils on both vehicle cost and servicing (I dare say there is a cost advantage in knowing that you are ordering x number of vehicles per month that you have pre sold).

It also allows for some recognition of the vehicle (If the police are using them, they must be safe, reliable etc).

That said, it is a trial....

Don't know if the police will keep using muscle cars. The rules for a chases are getting tighter and tighter and I believe in Tasmania their not allowed at all. They do have an intimidating look with their decals so I suppose that's half of the job done. I don't know what Hyundai they could use to do that. The brakes on highway cars are usually better grade pad material and I believe slotted rotors on some cars when replaced. Other than that their basically stock. The so called chipped cars don't exist like some who buy them like to think. Hyundai's look to me like a general duties car that they will almost get their money back at auction due to the low km's and early age against their very attractive buying price.

I agree. A great general duties car.
W.A. lost V8 pursuit cars when we were "lucky" enough to have a New Zealand Commissioner for a while.
He figured they weren't needed in NZ so weren't here.
It meant an awful lot of offenders got away on our outback roads.
Check a speed at, say, 140 km/h going in the other direction and by the time you almost stop, turn around and chase and they're a fair way away. You need a V8 to catch them.
Luckily, Ford introduced the turbo six so we were able to still abide by the "six only" policy and buy those, which have been very successful because they're quicker than the V8s anyway.
Cars like Hyundais would be used just for general duties, CIB, enquiries, etc.

What?!  Sounds like you have something against Kiwis!   :P

Seriously though I know what you mean - when you have someone come in and try to apply what works elsewhere.  Sorry just because it works 'there' doesn't mean it will work 'here' (wherever 'there' and 'here' happen to be - London vs Glasgow; Vic vs Qld; NZ vs WA) - you aren't doing your job properly if you make decisions without considering that and looking into conditions/parameters here.

The exception to that is where the person has been specifically hired to do something along those lines - overhaul processes/operations to match (or be highly similar to) another similar organisation.

Bloody Ockas and their V8s - I guess they need something big to put their hands on

Now there is a stupid (probably impossible idea) cram a V6 or V8 into an i30...

I think the biggest problem with police cars is all the electrical crap they have and the load on the alternator to produce enough electricity at idle. The V8 obviously has more torque at idle than a 4cyl but I suppose you could set the Hyundai to 2000rpm idle. What fun that would be.

Police forces tend to take luxury high end cars from time to time when they are offered on loan from manufacturers.
They get used more for PR than actual policing.
We've had Volvo, HSV, etc over here, then there were the Monaros in the Far East that were well-publicised.
@charlescrown that's right about the electrical load and police cars tend to have heavy duty batteries, alternators, etc as part of the various police packs offered by car manufacturers.
We have lots of Subaru WRXs in WA as well but traditionally, pursuit cars have been large Aussie cars because when things go pear-shaped, it's good to have some serious metal around you.
This is the case not only in normal crashes, rollovers, etc, but also when the baddies deliberately ram police cars which happens often.

This is becoming an interesting thread. NSW had a Lotus here for a couple of years but again it was a loan car and was all promo. They also had a Falcon V8 supercharged they had built again for promo and the police commissioner drove it till a young constable decided to see what it could do and smashed it. They also had a Commodore V8 supercharged built for them but  I don't know what happened with it.  I questioned them about the tuning and meeting emissions and the reply was who is going to question it? I gathered they were right with that one.

The supercharged holden V8 that the NSW police had as a highway patrol car spent most of its time in the first six weeks on the road in the repair shop....once with engine problems, twice for the automatic gearbox getting fixed and numerous other problems........DJR up in Qld put a supercharge Ford together for the Qld police....a very powerful machine......it had to go back twice to get the auto box fixed , but once they got that sorted out to take the huge torque it was off and chasing.....

Talking about police cars - IIRC recently high-performance cop car got buggered (or needed mechanical work) because some idiot employed by them (don't know if this was a warranted idiot or not) followed the memo about using xyz fuel for vehicles, even though being advised the HP car had particular fuel requirements.

I don't recall if it was highly tuned for a specific high, but commonly available, octane and they put say E10 in it - or if it ran a 'specialist' octane (e.g. race or aviation).
