but i have no idea whether to get a slim plus a standard or two slimlines
can anyone let me know what size is best for the rear of the car please

also i'm going for black on white - i'm guessing that should be pretty safe. i considered pink but i think i'm too old for that now

I have white (text) on black (background). On a white i30.

I have the older style large sized ones.  Look fine to me..

There should be some pics (covered by my bike rack) in here - http://users.tpg.com.au/ms6574/i30/

I was going to get them redone (I've had them 15 odd years) but never got around to it.

yes but only if you have personalised plates, otherwise its a set colour for your state,
its costing me $195 to just change the colour

oooh i've seen them before mr-mischief - you sent them to m eonce over at whirlpool
thank you  :D
the plate space looks quite wide and none of the i30's at the dealer had any plates on
guess i'll find out tomorrow when my old (blue and silver) fat ones go on

hey

i got my plates done. my actual numbers were given to me by my dad (we have the same initials) and i got the plates pressed in the eu style here in nsw.

this is the style on the website:

do what you think will look best. i seriously think these plates look awesome. and im yet to see anyone else on the road with this style yet.

If you do go for a standard and a slimline, but then you decide you would rather another slimline instead.
I have been told it by ppq it will cost $48 to get it replaced.

^oh thanks for that Lea
i must say i'm a little confused by pricing as was led to believe initially that getting new plates would only cost me $48 but the website says $195...i'm guessing as i'm changing the colour thats where the price jump is

RTA have weird pricing.

I can get my plates remade the same and from the RTA site it's going to cost me $100 as a one off.  I could have sworn it was under $50 when I got my i30 in February.

They have changed the site since then and by the looks also increased the pricing...

As I understand it you can only have the full-size, slimline or Euro-style plates, and you can't mix and match.

The RTA has a large number of colours available but I personally like Crystal's black writing on white background - maybe I'm just a vanilla kinda guy!

The Euro plates do look awesome on an i30 though. The car is designed for plates that size so they're a nice fit...

In Queensland you can get plates with Betty Boop on them!

Must be something in the water...

if you have only top screws on rear plate you can use slimline plates,if you have four screws you will see the holes when slim  plates are fitted.

oh!! well that definantly is a big point. i'm pretty sure there all four screws were used on fitting old plate to the car. i was rather worried as kid fitting it said he had to get a drill. wtf?
i asked if he was drilling into my car and he said no but not sure what he was doing to be honest
i'll double check tomorrow - i was just about to put in an order for two slims so glad i checked back
thanks!

Hi snowcherry, I have just changed my plates from red to blue to match the arrival of my new i30
and yes thats where the $195.00 charge is.
I ordered 1 slim and 1 standard. But now am rethinking my choice. Unfortunatley my i30 is still another month away so I won't be able to decide on re-ordering another slim plate until I see them on it.
(womans perogative to change her mind )

The wife's personal plates needed a slight modification by drill to make them fit.
Despite being on several other cars, including a couple of Koreans, the overall width of the screw holes on the plates needed to be widened by about 2 mil or so to fit the i30...

I am guessing that's what the kid was drilling...   or in context, possibly that's "wtf"!

I washed our i30 this morning, and deliberately took note of the rear plate space (Front is a no brainer slimline I think!).
We have full-size plates and it seems to sit low in the plate gap.
I reckon the slimline will sit pretty much right in the middle of the vertical space assigned to plates.

So I am guessing, good choice.

If uou can you take close-up pics of the scratches and I'm sure someone can advise on the best thing to do with them. No doubt Meguiars* has a product to help...

already used a bit of meguaires polish on it with no luck, the scratch is right through the paint sadly. needs a small touch up. its in the top right so when standing above car you don't see it but the new plate doesn't quite cover it up. i could get a frame for the new plates but not sure that would be good to do. i knew i shouldn't have put the darn frames on to begin with

its possible the kid at hyundai did the scratch when putting the plates on... :'(
