i30 CRDi Engine Oil

OK, I've scoured every page I can and I cannot find out which oil to use in my 1600 turbo diesel engine.

I'm having trouble with links that I find on this site, so I've not been able to follow any of them to find out what I'm asking. Believe me I have looked...

I'm a dummie so I'm not clued up on all the the specs and all thats stuff. But all I'm trying to do is top the oil up between servicings.

Can someone please reply to his post with a list of oils that are absolutely certain to be compatible with my engine?

By the way, i'm in Australia so oil only available locally in some areas of UK/USA will probably not be available to me here.

Also, can anyone explain to me why it is so hard to find out this information? I've searched the net for days before discovering this set of forums.

Hi Mr Hammy and welcome to the club... The oil must meat ACEA- B4

Pretty much any fully synthetic 0-W40 , 5-W30 or 5-W40 fully synthetic should meet that standard and do the job...

If you've got plenty of money you could go something like Mobil 1 or Shell Helix - Ultra

But I usually buy Castrol Edge sport 5-w30 on special for around A$35

We had a major site crash a few months ago and a lot of our links and attachments got scrambled...

I will get some of the Castrol Edge stuff if I can find it.
Hyundai wouldn't recommend a particular brand of oil for some reason. They just kept quoting ACEA-B4 at me and when I went to SuperCheap and AutoPro I couldn't for the life of me find one that clearly stated ACEA-B4. Guess that's a side effect of being a 'mature person'.
Anyway, your help is much appreciated.
just for the record, I have a Red Hyundai i30 CRDi Manual (2008 vintage with about 24,000 kms on the clock). I'm currently getting about 6l/100km doing about 25Kms each way to and from work each day. Mostly using the Monaro Highway between south Canberra and the Canberra city. Sort of happy, but wish i could get more economy.
I'm an 'old fart' with a gentle right foot (mostly) so I should be doing better.
Enough about my problems for now...

No worries Mr Hammy.. an oil change might make a bit of difference. Due to the hilly nature of the part of Tassie that I live in and the fact that I'm doing mostly short trips at the moment (under 10k's) I'm only getting 5.6 which is disappointing. On longer highway cruises I can get closer to 5.0 but I drive normally (not particularly economically these days)... although..

Due to a horendous year on our roads down here the police have really tightened up lately so my economy might impove going forward...

Have you needed to do that or are you just preparing for the possibility?

Probably not the official answer and opinion is sure to differ but you will be fine to top it up, if required, with almost any oil. Any mineral oil or synthetic oil that may, or may not, meet the ACEA B4 specification will do. Use w30 or w40 and don't worry. If you are purpose buying oil in advance you might as well get the right stuff. I guess I'm talking more about a situation where someone is sitting at a service station and hesitating using whatever is available for fear of damaging something.

So little oil should be needed it's most unlikely to modify the oil characteristics in any significant way. Much more important to not allow the level to drop and have it changed on time.

Of course when having it changed, make absolutely sure the ACEA B4 specification is met and the correct viscosity is used. There have been cases noted here where the dealer has got it wrong as well.

my invoice and oil change sticker [on windscreen] both say castrol magnatech,but only they really know. both my cars are petrol 2.0 engines and the oil is a different type to a crdi.

Synically, I'd suggest it's whatever they got in bulk that month at the right price. Nothing wrong with that so long as it meets the required specification... but you won't know.

Do what many do. Supply your own oil. Of course you might never know if they used it or kept it.

I'm going to ask for the empty containers back. I need them again for the used oil from my intermediate oil changes I do myself anyway.

Often that will mean that they are buying bulk oil from a local supplier such as, in Sydney at least, Anglomoil.. good stuff, too

I got the same answer from the dealer when I asked what brand of oil they used. Dealer blend but they couldn't give me a specific oil, so I buy my own (Shell Helix Ultra) and get their mobile service to do the servicing at my house so I can see what goes in.

We had our CRDi serviced today (7,500 kms).

The invoice reads:

"Engine oil (ACAE B4) 5W-40 - SYNTHETIC ($45.45)"

No Brand mentioned, and the service sticker is a Hyundai sticker.

That sounds odd...

The $165 I paid today included a wash and tyre blacking too, plus the normal printed vehicle report in its own little folder.

My Mrs asked how much the 15,000Km service will cost. The Service Manager (tapping keys on his computer) said....

(GET THIS!)

Are those "plicks" the ones just south of the river.... over the causeway?
i can't remember the name of the dealer, but a guy that works for me over there asked me for the details of the deal I got here in Newcastle.
He showed them to THAT dealer, and they basically laughed at him. He said they were almost NOT interested in even trying to sell him a car.

So I think "plicks" is probably a good description.

I forgot to mention...

When I picked up the car NEW, I queried it NOT having a cargo net..
The web site at the time in one section said SLX's get one, another section said they don't (the new cars don't have them anymore BTW).
The site also states, "Hyundai reserves the right to change these specs without notice blah blah blah".
So I said, look guys, no big deal. Would have been nice to have, but it's not a necessity. Don't worry about it.

Anyhow, when I went to pick it up yesterday after the service, I was chatting to the salesman we bought it from while we waited and out of the blue he said, "oh I forgot... There's a cargo net here for you too... I will put it in the car for you".

They are one of the best car dealerships I have ever had to deal with.
Sales, after sales support, servicing.. All fantastic.

m8 take it back as there is two different oil filters for the CRDi but i don't know the part numbers. the spares guy at a dealer told me as he wanted lots of details about my car and build date, then told me they have two different filters. i hate manufactures that change thing's like that in a short time makes it more complex buying service parts also at some point the older type filters will not be in stock.

hmm, interesting.
Ours is a jan 08 build
Called two places during the week, both gave same number.
Went to do the oil today.
Doesn't fit.......
Way to big...

Original; Inside dia, 26mm. Outside dia, 61mm. Length, 120mm.
Supplied; Inside dia, 40mm. Outside dia, 74.5mm. Length, 131mm.

Guess I'll just have to do two oil changes now thanks hyundai.
Wonder if they'll compensate me for the $100 of oil i had to put in with a dirty filter, and will have to drain out and replace AGAIN when they give me the right part.............

EDIT, at least I got to change the auto trans oil without drama.
GF recons it shifts much better now (15,000klm)

That number I quoted is for the original one 61mm Diameter and 120mm long...That's what I got anyway, it's the same as what I got for the last 2 services.

Lets put it this way, we bought the car in march 08.
I'm doing it's 15,000k service now. (actually, 14,600 but who's counting)
I figure I can splurge once every 18 months.
At a cost of roughly $200 in materials (engine oil and filter, gearbox oil, air filter)
That works out to $2.80 a week and a few hours of my time to do the work.

So not really a lot when you consider;
Rego ~ $660 a year.
Insurance ~ $400 a year.
Tyres, fuel, polish, water.

Really, breaking it down this way, the $100 for 5 litres of oil works out to be almost nothing.
Lets not forget we don't have to worry about spark plugs, so there's $20 that can be used towards oil.

Plus, if you keep an eye out, you can get M1 0-40 on sale like I did. ($70)

EDIT, just thinking, it's only another $65 per 'service' over what your paying, thats 0.4c a K.
Or assuming 20,000k a year, $1.65 a week.

Sounds less painfull that way

Daz mine is April 2008 build so think same as your's, and the price was cheaper for me too, first filter i bought was more expencive then the last time i bought one the price had come down just i think i payed $20?

Don't get me wrong D-R I don't begrudge you using it... Like I said I'm a tight a** to a point..

I won't compromise my warranty or safety though (except I was too stingy to pay pay the extra $990 for "asc" or whatever it's called when I bought my i30 in march last year)
