With about 20000km on them the Hankook tires originally fitted to both our i30's are disintegrating with chunks coming off the tread. One set have been replaced with Bridgestones of some sort which has transformed the handling. The other one will likely get Conti's later in the year.

As an aside, I recently hired an i30 for a week and drove it up and down the ranges behind Cairns in a manner not possible with the Hankook shod car I have. This one had a different brand fitted and it was so much better to drive which bears out the poor experience with the Hankook tires.

Never had a problem with the set on the wife's car (other than they were replaced just shy of 40k). The Toyos that replaced them were definately a step up though.

I think I threw a second hand set on my CW and they were still there when I sold it.

It's a long time since I saw tyres actually losing chunks of rubber.
But good you got rid of them. At least one set.
Don't wait too long on the others. Belt separation is a possibility (although pretty rare these days).
It's also unusual for more than one tyre on a car to suffer a fault (nowadays). For multiples on two cars, that's extremely concerning.
They don't ever get parked somewhere they'd be exposed to large amounts of some chemical or other I suppose? Like Ozone for example.

That's a worry, I never had any issues with the Hankooks that came on mine which I sold to Dave, I wonder what sort of millage he got out of em :undecided:

I've done 20k on the newer Hankooks and they're doing well so far.

Do you remember the brand, Keith?

Most likely Kumho.  Which with Hankook is like Hyundai and Kia.
Although I think someone said there were Nexens also being fitted of late.
Are yours 16" Keith?
My 15" Hankooks only lasted to 29,000 klms before they wore out.

Yes, Kumhos are what I got for the front after I had slightly bad alignment at 67,000. No problems with them at all. :goodjob:
The rears are still original Kumhos at 86,000. The only difference in the new ones is a slightly different type/name change due to updating their lineup. :victory:

Nexens is what was on the hire car. Much better than the Hankooks on our cars.

I'll take a pic so you can see whats going on with the Hankooks but essentially, the tread is breaking up with chunks coming off. No point making any noise about pro rating, they've a couple of years old now irrespective of the low km's. Can you imagine the drama with a dealer to try and get anything done. Chances are they will only want to credit a little against a new set they supply and install. And they wanted a million dollars to replace them when they reported the problem at the last service.
