People consider brand, colour and appearance ahead of safety features

Occupants have a 60% greater likelihood of walking away from a crash in a five-star rated car compared to one that Euro NCAP issued a one star score

Can you guess which brand tops the chart? We'll give you a clue: it's one that's synonymous with car safety

10. Fiat 500L (2014-)

Fiat's over-sized 500, the 500L (standing for Large)  MPV, received a five-star rating when it was tested in 2012. It scored 94% for adult occupant safety
+11

9. Mazda CX-5 (2012-)

Mazda's CX-5 is the largest vehicle the Japanese brand currently makes. It was awarded a five-star Euro NCAP rating in 2012, achieving a 94% adult occupant protection rating and 86% for safety-assist features

8. Honda Civic (2012-)

The Civic is Honda's flagship family hatchback. Also tested in 2012, it matched the Mazda in ninth for adult occupant safety and safety assist features but had a higher 83% child occupant rating to achieve five stars

7. Mercedes-Benz A-Class (2012-)

Another car tested in 2012 (Euro NCAP were busy that year), the A-Class shone in crash tests with a 93% adult occupant rating, 81% for child occupancy and 86% for safety assist features

 6. Mazda3 (2013-)

Mazda's family hatchback, the 3, uses the same platform as the CX-5 featured earlier in the standings. It matched the ratings of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class in 7th to receive a maximum five-star rating

5. Vauxhall Astra (2015-)

Vauxhall's all-new Astra received top marks when Euro NCAP tested it last year. It stood out for an 83% pedestrian safety rating alongside figures above 80% for both adult occupant and child safety

4. Peugeot 308 (2013-)

Peugeot's answer for a family hatchback is the well-rounded 308. It scored 92% for adult occupant protection and 81% for safety assist to secure fourth spot in Co-op and Thatcham's standings

3. Nissan Qashqai (2014-)

The nation's best-selling SUV for some years is also highly rated for safety. It achieved five stars in 2014, recording high adult and child occupant protection ratings as well as a 79% safety assist score

2. Volkswagen Golf (2012-)

Yes, the VW Golf passed the emissions requirements of Thatcham to get into this top 10.  When tested four years ago, it scored 94% for adult occupant safety and 89% for child occupant protection
+11

1. Volvo V40 *with optional safety pack fitted (2012-)

It comes as no surprise that Volvo - a car brand synonymous with safety - has topped the table. The V40 hatchback became the safest car ever tested back in 2012 with an unprecedented 100% rating for safety assist features, being the first compact car to offer AEB autonomous emergency braking. It also scored 98% for adult occupant protection and a pedestrian airbag system helped it score 88% for pedestrian safety
