Vauxhall's all-new Astra received top marks when Euro NCAP tested it last year. It stood out for an 83% pedestrian safety rating alongside figures above 80% for both adult occupant and child safety
4. Peugeot 308 (2013-)
Peugeot's answer for a family hatchback is the well-rounded 308. It scored 92% for adult occupant protection and 81% for safety assist to secure fourth spot in Co-op and Thatcham's standings
3. Nissan Qashqai (2014-)
The nation's best-selling SUV for some years is also highly rated for safety. It achieved five stars in 2014, recording high adult and child occupant protection ratings as well as a 79% safety assist score
2. Volkswagen Golf (2012-)
Yes, the VW Golf passed the emissions requirements of Thatcham to get into this top 10. When tested four years ago, it scored 94% for adult occupant safety and 89% for child occupant protection

It comes as no surprise that Volvo - a car brand synonymous with safety - has topped the table. The V40 hatchback became the safest car ever tested back in 2012 with an unprecedented 100% rating for safety assist features, being the first compact car to offer AEB autonomous emergency braking. It also scored 98% for adult occupant protection and a pedestrian airbag system helped it score 88% for pedestrian safety
