Good idea. Diesel all the way for me, until the day I call out the emergency services for filling up with unleaded petrol. It will happen one day I just know it

Diesel £1.30

I bought demo model which was a diesel. Fancied a change as I have never had a diesel car.

At time I bought, Diesel was about 2p dearer than unleaded but not now!

Also, MPG was quoted as:
Town - Diesel - 49.5 mpg (5.7l/100km) unleaded - 35 mpg (8l/100km)
Combined - Diesel - 60 mpg (4.7l/100km) unleaded - 45 mpg (6.2l/100km)
so big MPG advantage

I'm averaging low 50's mpg around town so happy with choice.

Hi Nick... Poll was a good idea had been guessing 3 to 1 in favour of diesel but now will know for sure.

Bought diesel because of big wrap diesel i30 was getting on the net (due to its economy) also because of best mates encouragement. Also due to driveability with the extra torque.

Still ahead even with around 15% premium in diesel over unleaded price (think resale of diesel model should be higher and still slightly ahead fuel wise if do bigger mileage)

I would have gone the diesel model, but that was not available in the SR range til a bit later one. I test drove the diesel model at the dealership and it did drive fantastic. 9 more sleep til i get it

Chose the Deisel for the superior fuel econmoy and also liked the punchy drive it offers.
Like you BeeJay, i woulded have liked the SR model in deisel but is not an option. Settled for a SLX which i have since lowered and added 18" alloys

Hmmmm - why did I choose the diesel? - Took it for a test drive and liked the way it drove/accelerated, plus I wanted a car that was relatively cheap to run.

Must say that after a few weeks of ownership I'm delighted with the decision.

In Australia the i30 Diesel is $2,500 dearer than the Petrol, whether its SX or SLX.
My dealer told me over the life of the car there is hardly any difference in servicing cost.
Also diesel cars get closer to claimed figures than petrol (and much closer than hybrids).

At todays prices for diesel and petrol (in Tasmania):
After 85,000 kms total fuel cost:
Petrol $9,608
Diesel $7,151

$2,500 is recouped, although if you allow for interest on the extra $2,500 then it may be 100,000 kms before its recouped.

The Petrol has filled up about 170 times, the Diesel only 100!

After 200,000 kms total fuel cost:
Petrol $22,608
Diesel $16,816

By now the i30 Petrol i30 is on its way to car heaven (or a new engine).
The i30 Diesel is nicely run in, gets even better economy and is still worth $2,500 more than the Petrol when you trade it in for the new LPG Elantra Hybrid.

Your raesoning for the deisel is spot on.
Another factor to allow is also resale. If you were selling or trading your i30 today I can guarantee you that you would recoup the $2500.

I agree with the reasoning re the diesel choice.  I would add that had we only been driving 20-30 thousand km (or even less) per year, the petrol would have made more sense.  

However, since picking up the i30 CRDi just over 6 months ago, it has already done 30 thousand km.  So, you see, ouri30 is set to do 50 thousand km (minimum) in its first 12 months.  A petrol would make no sense at all to us.  In addition, as explained by our dealer service centre, we have no need to have interim services, hence reducing our service costs.

I have done my maths and like kinesiologykid it makes sence for us to choose the diesel.  And what's more, my wife loves driving the diesel i30.

That's what I like to see on this site ... a completely unbiased opinion...

LOL - I guess I should leave this one alone... rather heavily outweighed by diesel owners here of late!!!

But it would be nice to see a true unbiased comparison .. trouble is, a lot of the factors have more or lesser importance to different people... and a lot of the factors are of themselves subject to wide variations.

I'm happy with our ULP i30 - more than enough power... very economical... very cheap to buy... looks nice... easy to get fuel anywhere... and doesn't throw anywhere near as many little chunks of carbon out the exhaust to add to the general gray haze and ill health of people over so much of this poor old earth

and now the car has settled into an average 5.8 L/100k... I'm using less fuel than the average for an automatic CRDi - despite the diesel being a smaller engine (1.6) !!!

OK - So I didn't really want to put the cat amongst the pigeons... just putting forward another perspective!
