To my many friends on this site...I thought it was worth sharing this bit of wisdom someone just sent me..

MOBILE PHONES
I never thought  of this........

This lady has now changed  her habit of how she lists her names on
her  mobile phone after her handbag was stolen. Her  handbag, which
contained her cell phone,  credit card, wallet... Etc...was stolen. 

20 minutes later when she called her  hubby, from a pay phone telling
him what had  happened, hubby says 'I received your text asking 
about our Pin number and I've replied a little  while ago.'

When they rushed down to the  bank, the bank staff told them all the
money  was already withdrawn. The thief had actually used  the stolen
cell phone to text 'hubby' in the  contact list and got hold of the pin
number.  Within 20 minutes he had withdrawn all the money  from their
bank account.

Moral of the  lesson:
Do not disclose the relationship  between you and the people in
your contact  list.

Avoid using names like Home, Honey,  Hubby, Sweetheart, Dad,
Mom,  etc....

And very importantly, when  sensitive info is being asked through texts, 
CONFIRM by calling back.

Also, when  you're being text by friends or family to meet  them
somewhere, be sure to call back to  confirm that the message came
from them. If  you don't reach them, be very careful about going  places
to meet 'family and friends' who text  you.

Heres another tip.

Lately there have been reports here that people are being called from unknown foreign numbers, the caller hangs up after maybe one or two rings, and then expects the person to call back.

When people call the number back, money is automatically transferred from your phone bill.
I think I'm explaining this right.

Works just like when you call in to tv show to support some event or some cause and a sum of money is transferred from your phone bill.

So another lesson, don't call unknown numbers back, if it's important they call again.

yes thats been a big one down here for awhile
the call gets redirected to a premium rate centre where you get charged by the minute

There's another risk too with newer phones...

People are posting pictures of themselves taken with i-Phones and the like...
Those phones EMBED satellite navigation information of the EXACT location the picture was taken....

Like... say.....   YOUR BEDROOM.... (yeah, it's happened !)

From there it's EASY to find the exact house/home on Google Earth.

Steve, i was thinking later, Oh no Daz did say it was a text message, i'm just wondering if that was normal, like i would think a wife in need of a pin number from Hubby would phone as that is fastest way to find out. i think, or would expect a hubby to know his wife. but then again could be normal just wondering if they could track were phone has been?
this is terrible to think about i feel for these people!

Yeah I agree. If my missus "texted" me asking for a pin reminder I would call her and ask where she was and why she didn't ring.

Then again I'd be even more amazed as my missus doesn't do texting, ever

I also never set my Home location at my home address on my sat nav. Just a junction about 1 mile away.

Also note that some sat navs, TomTom does this I know, holds your email address in several files in the root directory of the unit if you use TomTom HOME to update it. So if the unit gets stolen then so does your email address.

I think I'll be checking mine to make sure it's got the geo-location information turned off. I also tend to edit my photos after taking them, but not sure how much information is removed. Time to check flickr!
