There are numerous posts on motoring forums by members complaining that their in-built satnav, although recently updated, has old maps and that they use their android phone with google maps because it is kept up to date.

A friend who lives on a housing estate south of Wellsbourne in the Midlands has a 2016 VW car a Garmin satnav and an Android phe. He complains that none of them show his housing estate even though it started to be built more than 2 years ago and he has lived there for almost 2 years. The estate is still not complete – it will expand to almost twice its current size.

So I set out to substantiate his claim using my Venga with the latest maps updated in August 2016, my Garmin Nuvi which I updated with the latest maps yesterday, the Google maps on the internet and the HERE maps on the internet. I used my friends housing estate as a test.

The following montage illustrates the result.




The only maps that are up-to-date are the HERE maps which appear to be used by my Microsoft Lumia phone.

My KIA Venga maps – which are the latest are 2 years out of date
My friend’s 2016 VW is also 2 years behind
My Garmin Nuvi is also 2 years behind
The Google maps on the internet are also behind

Hence those who believe the Android Google maps are bang up to date, may just be mistaken in their belief

I'm a bit confused, looking at those pictures on my relatively small phone screen looks like google maps has as much or more detail as the here map?

The only map showing the 2 year old estate at bottom right is the HERE map. In the other three it is devoid of roads.

Looking at those maps reminded me when a few years ago a mate at work lost their paper road tax.

He found out he could visit a 'local' office and by taking proof of purchase he would be issued with a new paper road tax over the counter.

So at lunch time he punched the post code into his brand new sat nav and off he went.

45 minutes later he rang me in the office asking if i could ring them to ask where the office actually was.

According to the sat nav he was right next to the office but all he could see was a field full of cows in the middle of nowhere!

Thanks for that. For completeness here is the same location on Sygic GPS Navigation for Android, which uses TomTom maps. It has some roads but is not as up to date as Here WeGo for this location.



I'm a paying user of Sygic and am relatively satisfied but I'm prepared to give WeGo a go: just loaded it onto my phone and going to try it out over the next few days as I'm visiting my in-laws and don't know my way around. I wish I had two phones and two cradles so I could run both side by side.

I must say I am surprised that Google is behind with their maps.π

That was the road layout about 21 months ago according to my friend who lives there - the estate is gradually expanding but the HERE maps show the roads that are occupied. The roads under construction are understandably not shown

Sorry, I see it now on the bottom right. I am usually good at those spot the difference puzzles too!
