Hey all,

New to this forum

I have just taken delivery of one of the last 2016 CRDI manuals on the East Coast of Au, before the run out of this model

Boy did it take some finding

I am a diesel mechanic by trade and I'll be using it to travel 700km to work every 7 days so it will be doing some Kms. Hence why I brought it due to its fuel efficiency

Just wondering if any one has mounted an Oil Catch Can to one of these little rockets and if you would have any photos

As I've been looking and there really isn't to much room or spare bolts anywhere for a bracket under the bonnet

I have seen that someone else on this forum has fitted  an Oil Catch can but I think it has been fitted to a petrol model as there is no air box as I have

Any feed back would be great thank you

:welcum: Love the polite tone of your introductory question. Sometimes people forget their manners, but you are not one of them. I  can't help with this question but hopefully you will catch someone who can. (See what I did there..) :D

P.S. I thought we already had a rattly member. You aren't an old member returning are you. I'm on tapatalk so a bit hard to check.

Hey dazzler

Thanks for your reply  :)

Yes you already have  Rattly member but I'm Rattly1

The boys call me Rattly up at work so hence the call sign, I couldn't use Rattly so I went to Rattly1

They are already giving me heaps over buying/leasing this little rocket but after only after a few days of buying it I'm rather impressed

The fuel economy power and ride are rather impressive

Any way I'll nut out the place and bracket to mount the Catch Can ( may add some photos if I'm smart enough to do so)

I'll also throw a EGR block plate in

Still toying with whether I run a scan tool of some description or just drill a hole in the EGR block plate, I feel drilling a whole is defeating putting the plate in

Also toying with a EGR block through the ECU but have to get a price on this yet and whether they can do that and  remap

As I said I'm a Diesel mechanic and I hate recirculated crap going back into my engine  :crazy1:

Any way have a good night and I may catch you around

Cheers

Cheers. We are a world wide forum with different members logging in and out all the time so keep monitoring this thread for a week or so... Yes, nothing to embarrassed about buying an i30 CRDi they are very highly considered by those in the know. This forum was built mainly on the back of the torque, character and reliability of the 1.6 diesel.

Hi Rattly1,
My background is also in Diesel Mechanics, but have worked with light vehicles for the last 3 decades.
If the idea of a catch can & yr concern about EGR relates to deposit buildups in the intake tract then you might be best to hold off tinkering until an issue arises or symptoms become problematic.

Catch can is a great idea - it has application in some circumstances. Be sure your i30 will gain any benefit or has a requirement for such.
Given that you will do regular 700km trips (presumably on the highways) then that of itself will help avoid deposits in the intake tract.
If you use high quality & correct specification of engine oil & change it more frequently that the service schedule recommends this also will help reduce deposits building up.

EGR blocking can be problematic for the engine management system & will compromise your warranty. Not recommended.

In summary, the choice of vehicle (especially engine type) for the type of driving you intend doing is ideal. I really don't think you will have issues relating to EGR or intake buildups.
Do you have a bore scope? If so, use it to monitor intake tract buildups over time. Monitor & respond as appropriate - don't shoot from the hip.
I recommend you take a wait n see approach.

Perhaps consideration to additional fuel filtration could be more worthwhile, especially if you drive to & refuel in remote areas.
Cheers

Hi Rattly, know what you mean, just have never seen anyone post they had fitted one to an I30 CRDi, also have never seen anyone [ost they had to have air tract removed to clean out deposit build up from EGR. but i noticed how dirty oil always is with the stock CRDi i30.
good luck

Cheers for the reply
Yeah I suppose we'll see how she goes
She did her first run up to work this week and the fuel economy was great
Not hard to beat the fuel economy of my 5 year old Navara carrying almost 3 tonn
It was running at  about 10.5
So the 5 litres per hundred the other day was great
I shall keep watching and investigating the pros and cons

Cheers

Hi Rattly, Welcome.
A point not yet mentioned, the EGR is not functional when the air con is operating. From this we can assume recirculated garbage is less of a problem in Darwin than in Adelaide.
I have never heard of a catch can being fitted to an i30; or the need to have one.
While every remedy is applied to the Navara in an attempt overcome their French made shortcomings, you will find the i30 Crdi to be an efficient, reliable German masterpiece. :D
Enjoy your good fortune   :)
