Hi Folks,

New member here, not yet an i30 owner but it wont be long. Test drove the i30 1.4 comfort today and the Kia ceed 1.4.1. We ( me and fiancee) have provisionally said to the hyundai salesmen that we will be back in next saturday to order the i30. Its been a close call as both cars are excellent packages, drive well and suit us both but the interior and the extras you get with the i30 swung it. It was also a thrilling test drive!

The one outstanding issue we have is colour, i know its personal choice but what are folks thoughts on the Shine Red, Stone Black and Steel Grey?

Can anyone tell me what the differences are between Solid paint and Mica Paint. Is one better than the other, should we stick to Metallic Paint? The car we test drove was the Shine Red and it was beautiful, stunning looking but would it take a lot of work to keep it that way? How much waxing needed? The lead time for the red was 3 months - it was nice but a 3 month wait im not sure.
The Mica stone black, is that a special paint that needs specialist looking after?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts, great site and we look forward to becoming members!

Hi miller and welcome

Here's an answer from Yahoo Answers:

Mica paint has pearlesent flakes, which make the colour change at different angles and it also gives a hue tint to the colour.Metallic paint has aluminium flakes these vary from very fine up to very course and can be satin flakes or high sparkle, the cleaning is the same for both as they are finished in lacquer.

Hi miller - welcome to the club. You have made a wise decision with the i30 :D

As for colour, I started with Stone Black but now own a chameleon, as you can see

<--------------

The Mica black has magnesium (?) particles in it which glisten in the sun. It's a beautiful finish. HOWEVER, as you might see from other posts, it does cost £££ if it needs repairing as it's a specialist compound. I had a repairer (chipsaway) round my gaff a couple of hours ago quote for fixing a problem with my door, and they have to repaint the whole panel because of the compound.

Hi Hemmi & Shambles

Thanks for the replies, we feel like we have made the right decision, its a uk scrappage scheme deal, our old pug 206 did not qualify first time round as its only a V plate but now the gov has extended we sneak in so we are delighted! The i30 certainly ticks all the boxes.

Good to know about the Mica black, there was one on the forecourt in the shade and not cleaned so it was difficult to get a good impression but on the web and in pictures its looks great. Sounds expensive to repair for door bashes. If you dont mind Shambles how much was the quote for door repaint?

I've got the Stone Black Mica.

The advantage, I'm told over the solid, is that you don't need to wax.

I just wash with water & car shampoo and it comes up gleaming.

PS welcome miller

Hi and welcome to the club!

When you order your i30 be prepared to wait for a short time

I ordered mine in mid July and got it last friday!

Re colour I went for Steel grey as we didn't fancy black or silver, didn't like the blue and (having worked in the motor industry for many years) I know how non-metallic red starts to fade after a few years.

Very pleased with the colour.

You may well find that you get a 6 speed box (are you buying a diesel - can't remeber) and free sat nav (not that its up to much from what I've found but it's free so no moaning :D)

Good luck with the ordering. Let us know how long they SAY it will be

Dave

Hey Caecilius

Thanks for the welcome. The salesmen today said 7 - 10 days if we went for silver, grey, blue or black. He showed on an ordering system for the uk and he used a term\phrase that i cant remember now but there was quite a few of each in stock or this phrase (phrase was something like pre something, soz cant remember)\available uk wide. The solid red shine was a 3 month order.

He talked up the solid paint and said 3 or 4 good waxes a year, would keep its shine. He mentioned old fords used to lose their colour and faded but he thought this was wouldnot. In your opinion is this still something to be wary of?
The steel grey is nice.. Its a petrol 1.4 comfort we are going for.
Reading up on the mica \ pearlescent paint i think black could be the one, but i will need to discuss with the boss! fiancee..:)
Do hyundai normally throw in free stuff?

thanks to everyone for their messages.

I ordered my 1.4 Comfort in stone black and it arrived after 3 weeks. Have had the car for just over 2 weeks now and really like the colour.

Just done over 800 miles and have started to put my foot down a bit, 5500 rpm a couple of times in third gear and was surprised by the power. I traded via scrappage deal a 2.5 litre mondeo so was not expecting to much in the way of go.

This is a 2nd car as my first is a Volvo C30 2.0 R-Design. No Volvo jokes please

Welcome miller from Dazz in Tas (Tasmania Australia that is)

Although I think the red looks good in an i30 I have found the iridecent/mica colours with the clear coat are much less likely to fade and as eye said look ok with just a good wash.

They really are a great car in any colour or configuration...

Hi again miller

Did that salesperson chappie say 'pre-registered'??

If so it might mean that it's on a '09 plate (and  I also think I read somewhere that pre-registered vehicles are not eligible for the scrappage scheme)

Might be worth a question or two?

Dave

hi miller and another welcome from australia

and now my two cents
any colour will need a good wash and shine to really appreciate its colour, all colours will look fairly dull with layers of dirt on them. i'd go with the colour you like best really.
keep in mind that black probably needs cleaning more often, as it more than any other colour looks dirtier quicker. (unless in your area your dirt is black). red probably will need a good wax for colour depth but hey i'd put a good sealant on the black and grey anyway. overall the i think the grey does have a nice depth while throwing a great reflection with the mica, i think its more stunning than the black but can seem 'murky' at times, and of the three i'd go the steel grey in a heartbeat.

p.s my choice was steel grey or white but the grey was discontinued here so i bought the white

Hi everyone

Thanks for the welcome and your thoughts, helped alot.
From our point of view and only our opinion ( bumpkin! soz! ) we think the blue does not look as sporty as the other colours! Ducks behind the couch..
Although the blue and white stripes together is a different matter.

We are going to go for the black. The garage we are buying from offers free car washing every weekend so we will take advantage of that and keep it looking immaculate.

Yeah thought so too, but appears to be genuine. All new and used cars bought from the garage qualify for free washing.
