Limped home after hearing a high-pitched wine, then a rumbling from engine area, loss of power and thick clouds of smoke from the exhaust. Only had it two days. Oh dear.

Any suggestions as to what this might be? Had similar on a Rover 75 and it was the turbo.

Would be an uncertain diagnosis without actually seeing/hearing it but going on the high pitched whine description I'd suspect turbo

Welcome mate, sorry to hear this.
Could be any or all of a multitude of possible failures. 
We don't even know mileage , service history, colour of smoke, only noises from "engine area"!!
Try lifting the bonnet.

One of the reasons for asking that (other than the obvious "were there no clues when you test drove it") is that if you purchased it "over the phone" prior to seeing the seller, your purchase could fall under the distance selling regs, giving you the opportunity to get your cash back.

Yes, it drove very well on a test drive and for two days after the purchase ... then the problem! First indication of something amiss was the whine, which by my reckoning would make the turbo the likely culprit.

Anyone got any idea how much a replacement turbo + labour might cost?

Car comes with a three-month AA warranty - limit is 500 pounds, but the turbo is covered (assuming its that). I reckon a turbno replacement would cost me the best part of a thousand but if anyone out there has useful advice?

Only useful advice from me would be have someone you trust check it out. Hard to believe it could let go so quick. This is my first experience with TDI motors myself.

But here is the interesting part: The car was advertised on AA cars with a trader in Reading. The AA warranty was issued by the same trader. Part of the cost was paid by bank transfer to a trade account, not a personal account. However, trader insists it was a private sale (because he said so when he sold it to me). Trader refuses to take any responsibility under Consumer Rights Act 2015. I reckon he is acting illegally. It will be interesting what AA Cars and Trading Standards have to say about this.

Any comments from those "in the know"?

Being you are in the UK I can't say for sure, but sounds like you should have grounds for a full refund. Purchase price would have made me a bit suspicious though! Sounds too cheap!

Can't help but if it was advertised as trader did the bill of sale come on letter head with vat number.

Also, a thought,
Last Name and address in Log book..... may give an indication as to type of sale.

I'm sure i read a few years ago even tho' a person may claim to be a private seller, if they sell more than i think 5 cars a year then it was deemed they were a trader even if they did not sell cars as their main employment.

By Oz standards it does sound too cheap ( converting pound to Au$), but as per the whole thread, we can only guess the condition and mileage.

Same goes for quote by the  Brit Dealer vs local mechanic who may be even cheaper if he uses a second hand turbo.
Or Glyndwr could do the job himself at home, its not rocket science. 

Re the private sale: The dealer will say he was acting as an agent for the owner. This is legitimate if , for instance, the owner bought another car from the dealer and left the i30 hand grenade as a 'trade in', but remained the owner.  If you can prove that dealer did not sell it as a favour, and took commission, you may be able to say he has some skin in the game, MAYBE

Mate, I have to defend car dealers , especially in this case.
 In my  30+ years in the motor trade I have seen some crap dealers, but I've  also watched the most deviant public buyers.
Both sides are out for  their own advantage.
A dealer is self employed and not a mechanical expert. Any buyer can get an independent mechanical assessment before he /she  buys.  BUT BUYERS DONT!
They just buy the cheapest car, think they are SOOOOO cool....then blame the dealer if the car screws up.

Under the Sale of goods Act of 2015 ANYONE who works in the motor trade, be that a Tech, salesman, Service advisor etc etc is classed as a TRADER under law.

As such if anyone in the "trade" sells a vehicle, be it their own personal vehicle or one for profit they must, 1: declare that they are a trader. 2: Must supply a 6 months warranty of some sort, ie: be that a purchased warranty, or commit to repair the vehicle at their cost, full refund if not repaired etc.

In law you will not be classed as a "trader" when you have left the motor trade for 1 year and a day.

The distance selling act comes into force if you have initially enquired about said vehicle over the phone or online. You do not have to have placed a "deposit" or any type of payment for the regs to be enforced. First contact over the phone or online is enough.

Rights of rejection have been improved for consumers. Its worth pushing for full refund as the vehicle has got to be fit for purpose, and obviously it was not.

Reconditioned Turbos are available from Owen developments in Kingston Bagpuize, Oxfordshire. Hyundai use this company to recondition turbos for warranty repairs.
A turbo to fit i30 FD/FDe 2007/2012 are around £350 inc Vat. Replacement time is around 2.5 hours. You must also replace the high pressure Oil feed pipe to the turbo, Oil drain pipe and Engine oil and filter. The oil must meet ACEA C3 or above, with a weight of 5W30/5w40

We have similar legislation here, but each State puts its own emphasis on various clauses and ignores others.
However, the legislation does one thing- the provision of warranty pushes up the price of cars in the dealer's yard.
Buyers who will want the cheapest deal will, 1. accept the extra cost; 2. complain that the dealer is ripping them off; 3. buy privately.

Mindful of the lack of specifics relating to everything including this car's condition, I would suggest this may be over-reaction based upon an assumption :  "Its worth pushing for full refund as the vehicle has got to be fit for purpose, and obviously it was not."

We do know that the dealer provided warranty up to £500 for 3 months. The buyer appears to be able to purchase further warranty (or extend the 3 month version ????). He did not.
We do know that a Hyundai dealership quoted £3000 to replace the turbo.
Your repair figures tally with mine ; about £350 for a turbo plus same for labour.

The plot is thickening: AA Warranty claim that they do not have to pay their share (up to 500 pounds limit) because the car was sold at 109,000 miles and therefore the turbo problem would be "wear and tear" and not covered under their parts-failure warranty.

The dealer has been told by AA Cars (who assist traders to sell their cars by allowing them to use their banner) that because of his initial refusal to accept the car back or to cancel the deal and refund me, he will now be vulnerable to my claiming about 1000 pounds back from him for repairs in my local garage ... which I will do in the County Court.

It will be interesting to see how Trading Standards reacts to a complaint about a trader who refuses to accept his responsibilities under the 2015 act.

All being well, I'll get my car  back in about a week, with a refurbished turbo from the engineers Owen in Kingston Bagpuize mentioned in a previous post.  But, I will have to pay the full bill myself and hope that a court judgement will be in my favour.

I assume AA Cars is the 'Automobile Association',  the ancient defender of the motorist????

They seem to be ducking for cover on this. They issued, or allowed to be issued, a warranty on your vehicle that has (question finally answered thanks) done 174,000km.
 This is not a particularly high mileage i30.
If AA is using this mileage as a bench mark to deem the turbo failure as wear and tear, what does the warranty actually cover? All components on your car must fall under this out-clause.
In other words, AA needs to demonstrate that 100k miles is the normal; even average, failure interval for an i30 turbo. They cannot!

Taking the  Sale of Goods Act 2015 as supplied by @Funky , AA Cars work in the motor trade and must be a "Trader".
Therefore, any action you bring to Court will need to include both your dealer and your insurer.

AA Cars strong-armed the dealer and he coughed up the amount of the repair estimate. Money already in the bank.
Owen Developments technician wrote report about the mashed up turbo. AA Warranty accepted that and have given the go-ahead for repairs up to their limit of liability. They will pay me when the work is done and invoiced.
New turbo (not recon) received from Owen Developments and will be installed by Monday.
Been running around in a Peugeot 206 courtesy car from the garage these past few days.
Hopefully I will be able to report on Monday that all's well that ends well.
