That's easy to say when we're sitting back in our armchairs....

Where were people suppose to evacuate to?

Quite right Rusty.
It appears many Cairns people moved south - as it turned out, right into the eye of the storm.
All houses built since 1986 had to be cyclone rated so they are probably the safest place to be as long as they are above the storm surge.
For instance I heard them talking to one woman in Townsville on ABC radio early this morning. She was in Townsville with her two young daughters and her husband was in Singleton army base. How do you reckon he felt? Anyway, she had spent the night in her walk in pantry with her daughters. Apparently it's in the middle of the house and reinforced on three sides with besser block walls. Now THAT'S sensible. A wild night and she wasn't sticking her nose outside to see how much damage there was but her little girls had slept though most of it.
For those of you elsewhere in the world, the southern side of a cyclone is where the worst winds are (apart from around the eye, so Townsville copped a real hammering.

My best friend was lucky, her husband, who works over in Western Australia managed to get back to Townsville the night before...before they closed the airport so she at least wasn't on her own with her kids.

I talked briefly to her this morning (unfortunately I woke her up) :-[ so, at least I know they are ok.....no idea about damage though....

we've had a massive amount of rain in the last 3 hours and I'm flooded into my street and cant get out.I'm not actually under water but only 4 houses down the street they are knee deep inside their houses. the main road in is flooded with cars under water and we saw a car floating down the creek at the opposite end of our street.  :o

I saw a brief note that the Indigenous All Stars AFL game had been cancelled but they didn't say why But I guess I know now. Edit: Just discovered this was supposed to be in Alice Springs. :-[
Hope you are OK Steve.

ps. Looking at the Melbourne radar there's a break coming but more on the way after that.

the street and neighbours are still flooded . it got over night to the house next door and my garage and garden shed only got an inch of water in it.my house is on stumps and not a slab so I'm about 1.5 to 2Mt's higher than my garage is.  :goodjob: i cant take pics or video because I'm scared they will get water damaged. it just keeps raining here. my best mate and his daughter got stuck at our local shops [300mts from me] and took some pics and a video from in their car. if you look on face book you should find them, his name is Graeme D'Arcy and his daughters name is Jacinta. maybee the pics and video can be posted on here. the street has abandoned flood damaged cars scattered down it and cars left by their owners to stay safe and dry. I've got somebodys blue i30slx hatch parked out the front that's nice and safe.  thanks for all the well wishes guys. is there anyone else close to me that's copped this deluge of rain? it seems most of hampton park is flooded or had been over night.

Started raining last night about 9pm and hasn't stopped yet 6 pm.

Not light but heavy and heavy and heavy.

Seems as if the rain from Oz has been blown over to the UK by Cyclone Yasi
