sad sad day - poor snow has been clobbered by a rock on the windscreen

happened couple of days ago - a truck flicked large stone or rock at passenger side
its not just a chip but an actual shatter approx 2 cm radius then some lines radiating out, maybe 5 cm total across. i think. popped a little patch on it to stop dirt getting into it and took it up to Novus (similar to winscreen o briens i guess - have used them before locally)
was quoted $75 to fix it with resin, he said that will fill it in and stop it spreading. he didn't mention needing to get it replaced or anything. it's booked in for monday currently.

i am pretty happy with doing it that way but rang AAMI today as i wasn't sure whether i needed to lodge that against my insurance anyway (apparently not by the way). they seemed to want to talk me more into using my 'free' windscreen replacement that i have on my policy, though i'm more inclined to save it for more possible damage during the year.
i'm also a little concerned about not getting a proper hyundai windscreen, and feel 'safer' with getting this filled for now.

am curious what other people's thoughts are?

busy week and flew to sydney today so completely forgot to get a piccy of it

What period is left before renewal?
My thoughts are to get a new one.

I'm sure I've read, not sure if this site, that the screen can be under stress and the movement of the car body coupled with the small radial splinters I'd be worried that it will shatter completely without warning while driving.

Ask again before they repair as to liability if the screen shatters after repair.

My view would be to replace the windscreen. From your description it is to large to repair properly.

Hey snowy, I have to agree with the guys above.

Ultimately it's your (and your passengers) safety that's up for grabs. The windscreen will have been weakened by the cracks and no amount of filler will replace the strength it had before the incident.

A total of 5cm does sound a lot of damage for a repair job

If your insurance company will give you a free replacement, you can ask them if they will replace it with an original, if they will and the windscreen company can't get one straight away, ask them if they can patch the damage up temporarily free of charge to make it safe.
It won't be like the windscreen company are getting nothing out of it in the long run.

Hi!
I suffer with you...  :'(
My advice to you is to switch to a new windscreen, otherwise you will just regret it later...

Too big to repair..sounds like a unanimous decision to me...Sorry to hear about the Screen S/C but better than a dent or big scratch on the bonnet IMO...

I agree with your thinking Snowcherry, if Novus say they can fix it, and they garantee it, i would go that way as, everyone thats trying to help with advice, don,t understand what it's like here in Australia. plus Hyundai are promoting the new 2010 as Ncap 5, and 2009 not Ncap 5 so your not compleatly safe now.

we have windscreen coverage [it covers all glass] on our car insurances and it only cost an extra $20 per car each year.I've made a claim for a stone chip and had the windscreen replaced and cost me nothing.[on previose cars] my son even made a claim on his drivers side door glass to be replaced after he slammed shut the door and the half down window shattered all over the inside of his car.

To me, replacement would be the way to go, with an original windscreen if possible.

Hey Snowcherry,

I think you should change the windscreen. The additional bonus in the windscreen change is that your car will feel like a new one! During my years of driving, I have had a few changed - the change really makes a difference.

cheers everyone, appreciate replies...not sure what time my screen is actually booked in for tomorrow eep :-[

when i rang AAMI yesterday they didn't seem to be worried about any liability or whatever if the job was not done correctly or if screen was weaker etc, and the Novus guy didn't suggest at all at needing a replacement.

mmmmm insurance was renewed very very recently which was a consideration in going with the repair.

ick so much harder when not actually at home...
been out all day today - will have to try and get hold of Novus and AAMI in the morning to query it

I've had several repaired by a local guy.
Never any problems but the biggest had a couple of cracks - overall about 2 1/2 cm.
5cm would seem to be a bit big. Novus are generally franchises so each operator is essentially a private business. But if they reckon it's OK, I be prepared to give it a go.
The worst that can happen, I think is it will crack further, in which case you then activate your insurance claim for a new screen.

I had a 10 cm crack repaired on my Honda Civic, the guy here drilled it to stop the crack and then filled it with that resin. After the job you could only see what looks like a hair strand and only at a certain angle under the light. Drove the Civic for 6 years before selling it and the crack never expand. Saw it the other day and even the new owner has not replace the windscreen.

I'll add that a windscreen replacement is not without its problems either. I had one replaced and had to return it to be redone because it had a air leak which was immediately noticable as it let engine noise into the cabin.

Seemed ok after that but 4 years later I had it at the panel shop to cut out and repair the rust that started to bulge from the trim. Useless buggars had obviously exposed some bright metal when removing the old glass and didn't bother to seal it.

The cost of the windscreen when added to the rust repair was expensive indeed.

Just get the crack repaired, I say.

well this is what has been done.
i had left my car with father, i managed to contact him prior to the repair but i think he was unclear whether i actually had the insurance coverage and whether i was just inquiring or something.

so apparently they drilled the centre out and filled it with resin, then did something with a vacuum (?) to push the resin into the cracks but there was a pressure point there that made one of the cracks start running or something. but they have fixed it by drilling holes to stop it running, and i guess then filling it?and it will give eventually but not today - or something to that effect. doesn't inspire with me with hope but my father seems confident that its safe enough. was charged less as Novus apologised for not realising about a pressure point. [still not home yet]

i had also enquired about whether a new windscreen would  be the 'original' i30 ones and was given some interesting info. apprently Novus says the i30 windscreens are inferior to the australian standards and that a third party one will be stronger/better quality.

It is usual to drill a hole just beyond the crack to give it somewhere to "terminate", should it start to travel further. I can easily see where a small invisible crack could cause what they say happened once they started to play with it.

I wonder about the comment re the inferior quality windscreen. The Australian Design Rules must be adhered to by all manufacturers.

Snowcherry, good luck, the guy that did my windscreen on my falcon, said all windscreens are the same just different sizes. don't worry too much.
cheers

I would put some dark coloured card behind it (inside), make sure the sun is over you shoulder, and use macro focus mode on the camera if it has it, and take the photo at an angle.

i was thinking of some dark card or something today
no macro focus sadly, and i wouldn't have a clue what the sun is - maybe i'll pop out and ask cyclone olga - seriously the weather has been truly miserable here last couple of days, starting to settle down again now

will try again in a couple of days - the chip isn't going anywhere

My wife's Honda Jazz got 2 smaller stone chips while my being abroad last week - I had them repaired today. The chips were about 1 cm of diameter and both had cracks with enough potential to split the whole windscreen.

Repairing took less than an hour and the cracks were healed somewhat perfectly. However, the repair could not recover the missing chips of glass, so there are still clear "hitmarks" visible in the windscreen.

Put a sheet of graph paper about 1 foot behind the windscreen, and take the picture from the outside. Make sure the lines on the paper are dark enough for the camera to pick them out.

I would have thought that Hyundai couldn't import ANYTHING that didn't meet the Australian Standard ????????????
Thought that's how it worked??
