Having a hybrid - I already do most of what is recommended. But definitely not drafting (Tailgating) or accelerating briskly.
My car always pulls away from stationary by just battery power. If you push on the loud pedal a bit too far the engine cuts in to provide extra urge - which uses petrol.
I also use the adaptive cruise on main roads and motorways - other than in slow heavy traffic. The car is a better driver than me.
Slowing (or holding speed when going downhill) in a hybrid recharges the hybrid battery. The trick is to decelerate at a rate which slows the car by energy recovery rather than by the brakes. You get a feel for it after a while and judge when to start slowing down. It's one thing Libby just can't grasp. I always get much better economy on a long journey than she does.
Finally - cruising speed is a huge factor. My car will easily do 74 mpg (3.8 l/100) on a level road at 65 mph (104 kph). At 75 mph(120 kph) that falls to about 57 mpg (5.0 l/100). I tend to set the cruise to 65 mph (104 kph) on the speedo which shows as 62 mph (100 kph) on my GPS HUD.
My fuel spreadsheet currently records the car as having averaged 60.3 mpg (4.7 l/100) over 15,300 miles (24,600 km) to date
