Misfuelling... sad times

Was driving back from the Sunshine coast this afternoon with my dad in my car. He was driving, so when we pulled over at a servo he offered to fill her up. We made it about 500 metres down the road before the car stalled.

RACQ turned up half an hour later and discovered it was filled with petrol! It had been flashing on Empty, so that's a completely full tank of petrol in there; $70 worth.

Because it was getting too late, we had it towed to my house so we can arrange to 'fix the problem' tomorrow. It was so depressing watching the towtruck driver loading it up on the front lawn. I have no idea how much this is going to cost, and it's really bad timing because I just lost my wallet last week with all my cash.

Poor car, I've only had it a few weeks. So sad!

you may drain it out and it will be ok after putting in diesel.

Sadly I think that's not the case as the engine's been started and driven a distance

Diesel fuel pumps operate on very fine tolerances and are lubricated by the diesel fuel itself. Petrol in diesel acts as a solvent – it reduces lubrication and can cause damage to the pump through metal to metal contact.

Our CRDi diesel engines are particularly vulnerable – if fuel contaminated by pump wear debris gets as far as the common rail system you may have to replace the low and high-pressure fuel pumps, injectors, fuel rail, line filters and the fuel tank too.

Check with your dealership about the warranty too; it may now be invalid

Hi Mudling..

Very sorry to hear your dilemma.. I did the same thing a month or two ago..Fortunately I didn't start our car..

Cost me $65 for the wasted petrol plus $130 for labour to drain it and clean the tank out..

What Shambles has said is worst case scenario.. hope your 2010 improves..sounds like a horror start...

Not sure I would want to say anything to the dealership if it was me, especially if it could cause a warranty issue

Well I called my insurance company, and what do you know, they cover this sort of thing! It's quite common lol. I'm happy to pay the excess fee and let them take care of it. I'm stressing less now.

In the future I just won't let other people fill up my car. I suppose I should've paid more attention to what they were doing just in case, so in a way I'm partly responsible.

Browsing the RACQ Online Shop, their Diesel Misfuelling Device for 70 bucks would've been a lifesaver.

I'm glad you are covered. It worried me a lot I might misfuel until I bought a device to keep me in check.

Well you are one lucky guy

Make sure the whole system is cleared down.. gotta make good use of that excess fee

Will you be having the injectors and fuel pumps tested?

Think I would be tempted to take this route as well, as long as the impact on my insurance premiums were not affected too much.
If they have to replace anything like the fuel filter, I would try and make sure they get original Hyundai parts as well.

Hope you gave your Dad a good telling off and told him he will have to pay for it

can you get aftermarket fuel filters for the diesel?

I’m not sure that you could, just thought it was best to mention in case.

Because if mudling is having the car repaired away from the dealership, I just think it is probably best that they don’t know was has happened and been done.

Although I've had my diesel for 2.5 years I still do a quick double check before I pull the nozzle lever up and check the hose from the nozzle does go to the diesel pump.

Here we have multi pumps and its been known for kids to swap the nozzles around.

Mel must be older than she types (lol) we went metric in about 1974? 44 = 200lt but you need that in a 4X4 to get anywhere in the bush, not many servo's.

i like to use Caltex Vortex Diesel so i'm always looking for servo's selling that when i fill up so doubt i would miss fuel. but as they say anything is possible.

Who are you calling old?

The vehicle had a long-range tank in it. Basically meant we could go from Newman to Perth without stopping for fuel (depending of course on what speed hubby drove at).

Well I'm carless for the next week or two while it's getting fixed. By coincidence, the insurance company sent it to the place where I just bought it, and where I plan on doing all it's servicing anyway. I don't really know what's happening with it at the moment, just know they're waiting on parts from Melbourne. I know they're replacing the fuel line and fuel pump, not sure what else. I'll be curious to find out more when I get it back.
