Picked the car up today, after just a week.  Total cost came to $1,080 (nearly half of that labour though).  I'd read horror stories of costs going into the thousands so I'm pretty happy about it.

According to the invoice five types of parts were replaced.  Not being mechanically minded, the list doesn't mean much to me though.

• Part of the fuel pump ("tube-pump to rail"?)
• Fuel line
• Filter cartridge
• 2 x tube fuel rail
• 2 x tube rail to injection

So sort of a happy ending.  I'm just glad I can still smile about the whole thing.

I know that Ford in the UK has a misfuelling system on their cars. It should be done by all manufacturers. You would think the insurance companies would put pressure on the manufacturers to do it.

Ford easyfuel has no cap, and has a physial flap that opens mechanically when the right sized pipe is inserted. Its a neat solution. There was one aftermarket product "available" for the i30 with almost the same design. I tried to buy one but the manufacturer messed me around for four weeks and then stopped replying to emails.

After reviewing manufacturer information on the other 4 or 5 devices available for the i30 in the UK I bought the DDN (Fuel angel) device. It's robust and does the job, but it is chrome and has an orange plastic cap. This looks a bit naff, but you can't see it when the fuel flap is shut.

Some of the things to keep in mind when buying such a device is:

o Has is it been tested by someone like Thatcham or Mira
o Does it seal properly if the car is inverted
o Does it allow full flow filling
o Is it robust

The DDN device was the only one that I could actually buy with the Hyundai fuel filler thread that met these to my satisfaction. Like I said it looks a bit naff though. The other side effect is the nozzle doesn't go in quite as far as with not device, but this has not proved to br a problem. It may be a problem adding some additives, but the miller ecomax comes with the right sized pipe on the bottle.  

It works by having internal splines in the cap that only allow the right sized pipe in. There are less moving parts than in some of the solutions.

Keep in mind that you may also need a fuel can with the right sized pipe to be able to fiill up away from a garage forecourt. In later focus ford have included an adapter funnel thing for emergencies. It would be possible (but not very easy) to remove the DDN device.

I am a bit lost as to how any device would prevent you from filling with a petrol nozzle.  At the majority of the fuel stations I have visited, excepting the fast flow pumps, the nozzle on petrol pumps and diesel pumps are the same size.  Given that, how would any device stop you from filling with the wrong fuel.

The bigger nozzle on the fast fill pumps won't fit into a smaller petrol inlet making it impossible to fill a petrol tank with diesel in these intances (even without a special device).  However, that is not the case with the pumps I mentioned above.

Over here the ULP nozzle is narrower than the diesel. Such a device as shown would not allow a narrow nozzle into the filler neck; it would take the width of a diesel nozzle to engage the edge flaps which open the fuelling gate.

i still think a lable that says either petrol or diesel stuck on the inside of the fuel door/flap may stop the missfueling,or at least slow it down.

Though in my case, the misfuelling didn't happen because anyone forgot what fuel to use.  He grabbed a nozzle from the pump right next to to the diesel pump.  It said Vortex 98 and he thought he had the right one.

Inside the flap on my car it says - Diesel Only

On the actual screw top it says diesel.

This is just the reason why we have had two diesel cars for 5 years already.
This way neither of us, nor the kids, who use the cars, should not fumble with fuel.

Here in Finland all the pumps have green heads on petrol outlets and black on diesel, so with even a little alertness, accidents should not happen.

But they do, apparently.

On an armor museum near to us, the personnel told me that they have arranged to receive the results of misfillings, mixtures of petrol and diesel. The WWII vintage tanks they operate, whether T-34 diesel, or Stug IIIG Maybach petrol, are not that picky about the fuel and will run on about anything on their "action days". Those old machines may smoke just a bit more than usual, but that's all...

It is a feature of the Diesel over here (so I had no real excuse.. )

Because 2130s has 2 petrol models he probably didn't realise that (as i don't think it says NOT diesel on his...)

your rite dazz,our cars dont say on the fuel door petrol only,i noticed that accims cw says diesel on the fuel door.ours has nothing,not even on the cap.
