My 2010 1.6 cdri Auto (66K miles) when turned ignition on vibrates so excessively and shakes with a lot of noise it seems something is going to break. This only happens when lever is in Park, Reverse and Neutral. When I shift to Drive it goes away. I need to reverse to get my car moving. I am too afraid that something might break if i start moving in reverse with all that vibration and noise. Please help if you have any ideas.
Took a lift home from wife and have left the car overnight in a car park few miles away from home.

Sorry mate, Without being there, I can only assume that it is coming from the transmission. But what is the cause? Does not sound good!

You have more opportunity to pin point the source than anyone out here. I cant think of the problem arising in the past.

Rough, very rough guess, is something has come loose around the torque converter area and the transmission  input shaft is holding it in place when in drive.

I would suggest that you push it backwards, then drive forward to a good mechanic.

Apologise that I cant be of more help, but I would like to know the outcome please. Good luck.

Wild guess but lift the bonnet and have a quick look at the alternator drive belt just in case. If the clutch pulley seizes it can make a lot of racket . Watch the belt an tensioner.  If it's shaking violently the pulley has likely seized.

Given the description indranghimiray has given us, its quite a violent noise and vibration.
I had thought of broken exhaust mounts too.
But if OP is accurate something seems to have become unbalanced.

Just struggle with it being ok in Drive and not Neutral etc.

This morning I dared to start and reverse with all the racket going on. Then i drove around my village(all normal in Drive position). Engine revs up and car accelerates perfectly fine. But as soon as I slowed down or was going downhill vibration come back but not as much as when it was stationary.
Then magically after a few rounds vibration just disappeared even when I was slowing down or going downhill. Then tried going to neutral and reversed a few times....and normal again...I wonder when the wild juddering will resurface again.
BTW here in England temperature in night time had been well below freezing and was hardly a few degrees above freezing during day....not quite polar as in US.

Awesome, so did you check the drive belt before this miraculous self healing process occurred?

have a look at this video I did which was for a scraping noise from the chain which can't be heard but in th elatter part I focus on the tensioner pulley on the drive belt.

This is an Auto but in park.

Notice how it tremors. This was on our car that had a seized clutch pulley and after a brand new one was fitted.

The tremor on that tensioner is still not right compared to my other car however when idle is lifted the vibration smooths out.

Prior to this that tensioner was like a hammer, the swinging oscillation on that was extreme and made a hell of a racket.

I reckon the defection was 10 -20 times greater than the video

I'm still suspecting yours was seized too since you've driven it with no performance issues and now that it has suddenly gone away it may have freed up again.

If this has done more than 160000K or 100000miles and it's never been replaced, it could be suspect.

Mate, granted that our perception of major vibration is probably different to the OP; but explain how the pulley is acting differently in forward drive as opposed to reverse?

I have not had my problem repeat so far. I'll try to video it next time if it reoccurs. I know that it has an underlying problem. It's only matter of time before it resurfaces.

Thanks for your reply. Its a perplexing scenario that Gerard @tw2005  and I have discussed privately, and left it off line, not wanting to muddy the waters with more nonsense theories.

Yes, given your account, I think it will resurface. If you do video, please do so by moving from the cabin to under bonnet, under car etc. etc.
