Speed cameras that use GPS readings and recognise number plates have been secretly tested.

Combining satellite and plate-reading technology means the SpeedSpike system can measure a motorist's average speed over long distances.

I believe that a point to point speed camera system will soon begin to
operate in Queensland not far from where I live. It will operate over a
measured 13km stretch of the Bruce Highway, between Caloundra and
Brisbane.
Since it gives an average speed over 13km it's only going to catch those that
average above 110km/h across the entire distance. One could still travel well
in excess of the speed limit and then pull over at a service station for a
coffee before passing the second camera, and ending up with a legal
average speed :).

At my last employer, they fitted monitoring devices to all their vehicles.  They had GPS, speed and rpm sensors.  The GPS knew which speed zone you were in, if you exceeded the limit, it beeped and recorded a demerit against your name.  Same thing if you accelerated, decelerated or went high in the rev range.  The speed zone 'maps' were programmed by the third party people supplying the systems, safedrive or something like that.  The systems were made by siemens/VDO.  Different users had different privileges - ie I couldnt start a heavy vehicle with my 'key' as I dont have the license, other people couldnt start forklifts, or could only drive autos etc.  The data was uploaded to their server in realtime via GPRS mobile phone network.  Big brother could watch you drive anywhere at any time in real time.  The tech is there the cops could easily force this system into every car and every license, and suspend your 'key' at any time, and email you a fine within 30seconds if they wanted to.  One time 4 of us guys took a car to lunch, we parked across the highway from a large shopping center.  We were a little late, and the HSE nazi called us to see why we hadnt started coming back to work yet.  We then realised we had accidently parked outside a brothel!  She didnt say anything - hopefully she didnt realise where we had parked

Most of the coach companies in Oz now have this system. I believe the is a move to legislate all heavy vehicle to use it.

That is a bit different, I could see the justification in that from a safety and time schedule point of view...

Used mainly to prevent speeding, allows commpany to have close to real time monitering.
Also used by Countrylink to vet departure time at stops. They get upset if you leave early.

There are thousands of excuses for running late, but non for running early!
