Hi everyone,

I'm picking up a 2012 i30 FD and it has the typical clicking/clunking from the power steering that I strongly suspect is the usual MDPS coupling issue.

Does anyone from Perth, Australia have a mechanic they'd recommend to do this repair?
If you've had it done, how much have you paid for it?

Thanks!

Next long weekend I'm doing mine myself. I just need a good video or picture sequence to be confident of not stuffing around when I get started. I already have a bag of 10 in from eBay.

The product information bulletin is on here somewhere.

I may be naive, but why aren't Hyundai liable to replace this part.
I would expect an integral part of the steering to last many years.
Any recommendations of mechanics in Sydney to fix this?
Thanks

It is rubber and it is 10 yo.
Could see how your local dealer responds to that question.

That's a pretty easy job to do, done it myself took me around 3hrs and a couple of cans of Stella
There's a good video on YT explaining whole process step by step. Saves you a lot of money as been quoted £200 by a local garage...

Can you provide the relevant YT links? I've tried but they always fail to explain how to remove the plastic panels.

 Hacksaw Firty? That would be murder! :crazy1:

If I don't find a really clear how-to, I'll be the contortionist upside-down on the reclined driver's seat, head among the pedals, just like I did for swapping out the flasher unit.

When you learn to use our search function you will find screeds of info and links.  This is a very helpful site. :whistler:

From a silent someone who has actually done this job countless times:

In the video, which as you say is one of the better ones, the mechanic is still learning on the job. Notably, he starts to dismantle the motor and control unit, then he realises that the only sensible way to work is on a bench. Hence he marks the shaft  :goodjob2: :goodjob2: :goodjob2: and then removes the entire column.

Personally, I find that by first removing the steering wheel, wiper and light storks , it adds 10 minutes to the job,  but gives you heaps more room to get at plugs and bolts.

Hope this helps some new member some day.

Found out just today JAX Tyres will do this job for about $250, the Kwinana store closest to me has 40 couplers in stock  :)

Very nice people at JAX, I thought correcting tyre pressures was the solution but the suspect column issue was still evident, JAX looked at the car this morning and found the front camber out slightly but the rear tracking was way out...all sweet now :happydance:

Word of warning @The Gonz . Mate, while the clarity of this film is excellent,  the  'mechanic' does not make it clear that he has attempted to dismantle the motor and sensor under the dash, then he realised his mistake. Suddenly the whole column is on the work bench.
You need to watch carefully for the start of that blunder.
Also, before you start, pull back the carpet and mark  (align) where the column slides onto the steering rack spline. Then undo the bolt and lever the column up off the rack spline. Keeping these splines and motor bush mechanism in original alignment will help avoid doing electronic alignment. Good Luck

Sorry to bring up an old post, but my i30 has just developed this issue and while I'm confident I could do the repair myself, I'm just not going to have the time.

I've called a few places regarding price and was feeling hopeful when I found this thread and JAX in Kwinana doing it for $250 a couple of years ago, I was expecting it to be a bit more, but I was just quoted $420 which is about inline with what Hyundai Morley and another local mechanic quoted me.

Does anyone know of anywhere in Perth doing the repair for under $400?

Hi
I know this is too late for you but in case anyone else needs help.
I had mine done a few months ago by Huntingdale Power Steering.

He is mobile service, picked my car up and took to his workshop. Retuned an hour later job done $150.
