Just my 2 cents.  :D

I can see where you are coming from Michael... For the purpose of this exercise I wish I lived in Canberra .. then I would have Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney and a heap of Country dealers to negotiate with.. Sometimes Bass Strait is a pain!!! From past experience Motors (my local dealer)  drive a hard bargain because they know they can...

Because at this stage the i45 looks the best compromise for looks, performance economy and price I can't really walk away and buy a Mazda 6 diesel for example which is around A$10,000 more than the i45 active model...

P.S. I had a 30 Kilometre drive of a Commodore International (The 3.0litre V6 SIDI Special Edition) today. Terrific Value for that size of car at $34,490 for the Sedan with Leather Trim, 18" alloys, Cruise Control, Bluetooth, Auto Lights, Rear Parking Sensors etc. etc.. However, there were some things I didn't like .. The brakes were very wooden (didn't feel power assisted at all , the Instruments looked really "low rent" with no dressing up and the worst thing is the fuel economy on my loop which was about half open road and half around town (driving fairly economically) averaged 9.8 LPH according to the trip computer...Sorry "close, but no Cigar"

but as you said... its a lot of car for the money... your getting more than most can offer, mabey you should comprimise fuel economy?

It only comes in a 6 speed Auto and didn't really feel lively enough after the CRDi

It was a bit too much like the Camry Hybrid a bit bland and boring to drive.. I liked the room, the big car ride and the quietness though.. I really liked the SV6 model better to look at and that is good value too Cloth Trim but a very nice body kit and spoiler etc.. for $35,990 (I think) but it comes with the 3.6 Litre motor which is even thirstier..

for one, they want you to collect the car from your local dealership and establish a relationship with them

I've heard from work collegues who have non Hy cars that this does play an important role if you have a dispute with the manufacturer.

1 bloke had nearly 2 years of to and froing .  In the end he just got rid.

The garage are more inclined to give you help and sort things out on your behalf than an owner whose first vist to the dealers is because they want help in sorting out a problem.

I'm a great believer in using the dealer for service for the same reason as I find their prices are'nt that much different to independents where I live, sometimes cheaper!!!

Fair enuf Dazz, there's only one Hyundai dealer in Tas? I would still try to get a good quote from the mainland, add the cost of the ferry and hit them up with it. Of course, I haven't dealt with them so I don't know how amenable they are to negotiation, but at the end of the day most dealers would rather sell a car than not sell a car. Unfortunately, if they are the only dealer in Tas I think that's even more reason to try to come to some sort of satisfactory deal with them. You want to have a good relationship with at least one local-ish dealer. Of course, if they can't get within cooee of any other dealer then the answer is pretty simple...

And as for the Commodore, they do have a lot of fiddly warranty issues. The HFV6 isn't a particularly pleasant engine IMHO even after the SIDI addition which did improve matters, and they are catastrophically complicated (to the point where we had to replace an entire motor in one because one of the sensors failed) so worth avoiding from my experience. Also, the International, while it looks nice with the 18s, is basically an Omega with big wheels and unbelievably cheap leather. The stereo has no multimedia capability (except for an ipod jack with no control ability) and sounds rubbish. The only VE worth considering (and I worked at a Holden dealer too) is the SS or SS-V manual. And frankly, although they're a laugh to drive, I wouldn't be laying out my own money on one.

Give me an i45 anyday.

Thanks Michael.. I love this site it's great to get all the varied opinions...

Yes only one dealer in Tas (with four sites) I know the service Manager quite well as I have bought a lot of cars from them (and one of their predecessors who he used to work for) So I should be ok on that score..

Yes at around 31,500 drive away for an i45 Manual I think it is going to be hard to beat..Wish it would hurry up though

I did a search for fuel efficient cars and i45/Sonata 2.4 GDI came up number one for "big" cars on a US site... :D  (which I thought was a bit strange considering Camry Hybrid etc...)

I'm probably going to get hung, drawn and quartered for this, but Hybrids are a complete furphy. It's a partial (and not very efficient or practical) solution to a much bigger problem. You can argue that they're smoother or quieter or whatever, but for the additional environmental damage from building them and the negligible fuel savings mean that they're a triumph of marketing nonsense over reality and common sense.

Common Rail Diesel and Direct Injection Petrol are a much better compromise while we're still reliant on oil. If we're going to get rid of oil burning cars let's do it properly rather than fiddle around at the edges building half-assed hybrids that do more harm than good and give some people a sense of self-righteous superiority because they "love the environment" and everyone else murders baby seals for fun.

My cousin is one of the worst offenders, she has a Lexus Hybrid that uses more than 10l/100km and has the gall to have the number plate "GAIA" (the earth godess) because her truck uses slightly less fuel than some other pretentious nitwit who bought a V6 Lexus. Whatever.

Oh, and those green "Hybrid" stickers that Toyota put on the number plates of their press-issue hybrids make me want to impale them on a large oriental disembowelling cutlass.

How's that for an off-topic rant?

Lucky I didn't settle on the Camry Hybrid :-[

If it had been slightly more lively to drive, had been A$5000 cheaper and had a bigger boot (only about the same capacity as the i30 hatch thanks to a **itload of batteries) I would have been seriously tempted. I think it is the cost keeping it down to about 20-25% of Camry sales..

Hi John.. Mentioned this in the i45 thread... We are not SUV types (particularly the wife)

We did take one for a short drive.. The seats are very firm.. and found it noisy and not as reponsive as I expected it to be (yes it was the Diesel)

Like I said elsewhere probably only did 5kms but had the wife in my ear "why are we driving one of these.. I don't like the look of it.. The seats are too hard.. etc. etc..."

I gave Private Fleet a try.....
The girl was very helpful and spent quite a bit of time trying to make me happy but at the end of the day the price just wasn't good enough to justify all the mucking around. Their best price was only $100 less than my local dealer.
Altho I would've liked to have bought locally, I ended up getting it from Wights in Traralgon (Victoria) as they really wanted my business.....
Saved me nearly $500 compared to the local dealer too....
