Alright team,

I have a 2012 GD Turbo Diesel 6Spd Manual.

When accelerating hard today. From stop start, I noticed the car put out a bit of a black smoke from the exhaust.
No white smoke tho so that’s always a good sign.

Car itself has done 189,000KS but has a full service history.

Any clues as to why this might be happening?

Mine does the same, although not an i30, my vehicle is the Kia Ceed version (without a DPF), I say this is due to the low mileage I usually do and only drive it hard (through the gears) every couple of weeks or so, I would say this due to the sut building up when driving it slow and small non motorway distances.

If you have a DPF, is this happening when it's regenerating?

I think mine does. Yes. Is it something I need to clean/change?

Are you in Aus? SA could go multiple ways. If you're in Aus the GD doesn't have a DPF.

Black smoke is essentially incorrect air/fuel - being too much fuel. I run diesel power in every tank and I get no noticeable smoke even under harsh acceleration. I would start by running a diesel system cleaner personally and assess from there.

Yeah, I am in S.A, Australia.

They dont have DPF's over here?

Why is that?

And regarding the diesel cleaner, can you elaborate on what you meant by that?

Thanks,

Hi, Divv.

The environmental regulations are different for different countries and we ended up with Diesels without DPFs.
I think later models are different.

The cleaner is a fuel additive. I think of it as the Redex I used to feed my HQ to flush out the system back in the 80s.

Thanks,

No DPF on GD due to the different emissions requirements. It's a good thing for me.

This is what I use in every tank-https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/chemtech-chemtech-diesel-power-fuel-additive---1-litre/10386.html?gclid=Cj0KCQiAkZKNBhDiARIsAPsk0WgtA52MTLohN25GS2hSSlbumgRUvy7HE8B99mFlBTt2ffzdST2dwxwaAgwKEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

This is what I would recommend if you came in store and talked to me as initial treatment - :link: Diesel Clean & Boost | Supercheap Auto followed by regular doses of the above.

If its an injector that's stuck open a bit your problem should be resolved, if not then you could see a mechanic. Either way a system clean will only be beneficial to your car.
