Ugh - had a day from hell. Short version - NEVER, EVER have confidence in the basic commonsense, intelligence & human decency of your societal peers when sitting on a jury in a very important court case. :disapp:

Dropped car off at local Hyundai dealer - explained issue/s. As I avoid them like thee plague (going to the dealer) I also asked if they could check if any vehicle firmware needed updating, specifically the DCT (as I was led to believe this was still the OEM version and had been improved). Also had a rego check done as thats next month or so.

End of day came back after my civic service, advised the Left rear wheel speed sensor was shown immediately by their system to be the issue. They checked it, appeared fine to inspection but tested and it failed so they replaced.

$496 for this alone (not including the rego check).

They claimed 2hrs labour for the job - suffice to say I found it a tad exhorbitant but after having a car reduced to 1990's level of safety for a month (no ABS, no ESP etc) and on the back of a horrid day I just went on my way putting it down as a lesson why I don't go to the dealer. Have attached the invoice with old school redacting - just incase it helps others that have a similar issue.

It appears the sensors are available for $60-100. You may be able to simply install and then clear the codes via a battery disconnection etc - but DYOR.

Lil annoyed overall as a 2018 car should not have ABS sensors failing already.......

Hi Bob, just saw your post yesterday.  Sounds you had one of those "bend over, touch your knees and try not to cry" days.

As a result, I had a stern talk to my car's left rear wheel speed sensor. ;)

EDIT: I have now realised that this is page 2 of this thread and I seemed to have missed the lot?  No matter, as after having a very quick read of the earlier posts I have nothing new to contribute.

Morning @Bob.W ,

Glad your issue is finally sorted (we hope) but commiserations on your bad day and hopefully the court case judgement is the right one.
Hyundai service departments can also be their own special kind of hell and I'm still recovering from my last issue of failed spark plugs.

I was unable to read any parts of the invoice (excellent redacting), so was wondering if the DCT, or other, firmware was re-applied and/or upgraded? I know the ABS ECU/Motor unit also has firmware and was wondering last night if that may also be a possible fix, not that Hyundai would ever admit to that.
Was the $496 for the 2 hours labour and the wheel speed sensor?

I previously checked my front wheel speed sensors but never got around to the rear ones. I will try and find some free time today to inspect/test the rear ones with a multi meter (should be a simple voltage increase when wheel/hub is rotated) and report back. Failing that, I may just bite the bullet and buy one from the wreckers near my mechanic.
Funny the scans by my mechanic didn't pick up the wheel speed sensor, but I also believe that those can't be tested unless the car is actually in motion, and he only ran tests on my car while it was stationary.

@TerryT , hopefully your car listens as mine is like a 4 year old in a candy store.

Thanks again BobW and hopefully your outcome, albeit expensive, helps the rest of us sorting out our issues. I will also keep everyone updated with my findings, and hopefully a fix too.

Hi @Gazza-75 , ah mate, dunno if you've ever served on a jury but it is eyeopening to say the least.  And I say this as someone who MANY years ago went to court as a defendant in a trumped up assault charge case & who's brothers death (run over by a driver on meth) is still presently before the courts.  So I have seen a bit - and was still shockingly underwhelmed by my peers on the jury in a multitude of ways.

Let me just say there is one LESS child molester on our streets and I could not be happier. ;-)  Alas I think pretty tight rules about what jurers can say, even in completed cases.

I was unable to read any parts of the invoice (excellent redacting),
Ugh - yes sorry but the forum attachment limit is 150kb!!!  In 2024....  Which is crazy and makes text based docs near impossible to upload to the site feasibly.

so was wondering if the DCT, or other, firmware was re-applied and/or upgraded? I know the ABS ECU/Motor unit also has firmware and was wondering last night if that may also be a possible fix, not that Hyundai would ever admit to that.
I specifically asked them to update any firmware that needed updating on the entire vehicle. Specifically asked about the DCT and engine computer (simplification I know but wanted to be broad) - actually told them not to worry about the headunit (radio/GPS). They CLAIMED they checked the entire vehicle and nothing needed doing except the head unit, which they say they did.  Did not apply a charge for this.

So I dunno - only time the firmware anywhere could have been done was ~2019 - but not sure if I could really check - so have to take their word for it.

Yes, thats correct. Find it hard to believe it's a 2hr job considering they say ther initial scan indicated rear left ABS sensor fault.  Even if I say that took 30mins, it took another 90mins to remove, test & replace it? Pleeze.

Don't get me wrong, but you can either charge a crazy hourly rate ie.g $150+ an be accurate with the time taken, or charge a more understandable rate eg $100ph - and overrate the time taken - but DON'T do both.

I previously checked my front wheel speed sensors but never got around to the rear ones. I will try and find some free time today to inspect/test the rear ones with a multi meter (should be a simple voltage increase when wheel/hub is rotated) and report back. I admire your technical nous. Bear in mind the root cause of this may not be the same - as you pointed out - similar codes/error lights are linked to the ABS electrical issues.

I have to say I do find it an act of corporate bastardry that Hyundai have programmed the vehicle firmware in a way where as stated earlier, the majority of VERY significant vehicle safety features were completed disabled by such a fault.  I KNOW some systems are interdependant - and while it may not seem obvious, they could rely on each other.  But why is the vehicle's Cruise Control, Stability COntrol, Forward Collision protection etc disabled...?  Sure they'd be less effective if you have to brake as you'd not have ABS braking - but should still work.

Seems like Hyundai deliberately ensured that if one part went down they all did - hence the consumer was forced to sort out - instead of putting up with just one system being out. Any intelligence would say that the systems should be as independantly stable from each other as possible i.e if one goes down, others will still work - Hyundai went the opposite. A coincidence? I think not.

Thanks again BobW and hopefully your outcome, albeit expensive, helps the rest of us sorting out our issues. I will also keep everyone updated with my findings, and hopefully a fix too.
Look forward to how you go - your posts and those of others were far better than mine, so appreciate your efforts greatly. Cheers.

Sorry for being quiet for a while, work and other life events have taken up a lot of time.

I tried removing one of my wheel speed sensors which was a fail as I could not loosen the bolts holding the hub.
In the process, I have accidentally popped off the piston when applying the park brake. I got it re-installed but have now got air in the brake line. Once this is sorted (will bleed the brakes this weekend) I will probably cave in and take the car to Hyundai.

Funny thing is that the AEB warning has gone away intermittently over the last few weeks, which may, or may not, indicate a loose connection. I can only hope.

Updates to come.

So I finally took it into the dealership and they told me that the entire ABS unit had failed and that it might cost me $5000AUD since it was out of warranty... BUT they mentioned that Hyundai might cover it since it was such a large figure and because it was just outside warranty. And so they did and I took it in and and after their work replacing the ABS unit, everything works again! I'm disappointed that this happened to a <6 year old car but Hyundai came through at the end so I'm happy overall!

Thats an excellent outcome but its a joke that such a high $$$ component can fail so early on - I mean if they'd played hard ball it's around 1/3 of the cars value - and there is no way the part & labour is even 20% of that.  No wonder they're called 'dealerships'.  Well done by you but not ideal to be put in that position.

Or, "S tealerships", which is what I think you were trying to say!   ;)

Interesting, Bob, when I first tried typing in "S tealerships" without that deliberate gap between the "S" and the "t", the text would always automatically change to "Dealerhips"???

autocorrect got me!

Nope - the forum changed it as we don't like referring to dealerships by that name. A small number of our members are in the sales & support business.

So, I'm still waiting to get a booking for my car and is tentatively booked in for the 13th Aug.
Quoted minimum $200 for one hour labour and I'm not looking forward to this at all to be honest.

Car went in this morning at long last and just got a phone call confirming it is the ABS module and quoted over $5000.
I told them that is ridiculous and not paying the exorbitant price and now have to pay the quote fee of $200 (daylight robbery).
They couldn't even tell me how they came to this and just said the wiring checks out fine.

I'm at a point now where I don't want to waste any more money. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi - did you ask whether Hyundai Australia will cover the cost of this part + installation?
Request this explicitly noting your expectation at having this covered under the Consumer Guarantee laws.

If you have serviced your car according to the manufacturer's requirements (doesn't have to be at Hyundai) then you are covered by the ACCC Consumer Guarantee...

:link: Consumer rights and guarantees | ACCC

The ABS module is not a wear & tear item and a reasonable consumer would expect this to last longer than 7 years.

Hope this helps.

Finally, car is fixed.

I pondered the headache of going back to Hyundai and mentioning the whole ACCC story but decided it was not worth the headache (Thanks @Pappy for the info). I did ask them about the fact the car is only 7 years old and the part should not fail within this period but was just met with 'we can't do anything about it'.

So, the fix only cost me an additional $250 after Hyundai's $200 'quote' and my final actions were as follows:

1. Found a person wrecking his 2019 i30 N Line and risked buying his ABS module.
* The only test I did before buying was plug in the module into my car (no brake lines) and switch car to 'Accessory' and noted the ABS light was off but traction control still showing.
* This module had the exact same model number but the SW version was PD 1.04 (mine was PD 1.02).

2. Booked a time with my mechanic to assist in fitting the module.
* I did the fitment, and he did the OBD work and brake fluid change. Luckily he's a friend and costs were minimal thanks to my 'mechanical' work to help out

3. Once the module was fitted, lights did not clear but the OBD scan listed new errors and not the original 'C240201 Motor Electrical' code:
C128504 - Longitudinal G Sensor Not Calibrated.
C163808 - ACC Communication Error
B3687 - Refer to OEM repair Information for code description.

4. All codes were cleared with only the C128504 coming back. This was an easy fix and required a combination of a config setting and starting/stopping the car a few times.

Car is now back to its old self and has been fine for the last 9 days (touchwood) and I'll be opening up my old ABS module to inspect/test the electrical side of things in the next couple of weeks and will report back any notable findings for anyone interested.

Hope this 'final' fix will help anyone else that has the issue and is not happy to part with over 5 grand.
