Excessive Oil Consumption 2.0L Petrol 2018

My first post...

My 2018  2.0 Petrol I 30 is using around 1ltr of oil every 1800klms. It has done 150,000 k's.  I bought it second hand with18,000 k's on the clock.  It started using oil early on and it has gradually got worse.  I have tried all the things suggested by the local brains trust including, changing oil brands and grades ,more frequent servicing (every 8000k's) and engine flushes. None of them made a difference.

Hyundai said it was was not a warranty issue when it was under warranty.  They suggest engine removal, strip down and a measure is needed to determine the problem.  Hyundai ( head office and the local dealer) will not acknowledge it is known problem despite there being a class action of other people having the same problem.  I have joined the class action.

My question s are:
Anybody else having the same problem?
Anybody had engine failure that was due to the problem causing the oil consumption.
Anybody have worse oil consumption or a car where consumption has stabilised?
Anybody had it fixed and what was needed to fix it?

Oil is relatively cheap compared to an engine rebuild but I do not want to have a failure that necessitates a new motor.  I have priced a secondhand motor ($8000) but my fear is that it would have the same problem?

Sounds like Hyundai Australia is taking the absolute mickey - you're having to add just over a full litre of oil for just under every 2000km you are doing???  Your car from behind must be like a smoke making machine!

Hard to believe that as a company they could deny such a widespread issue.

Maybe time to cut your losses and sell to someone else - shitty solution but that sounds like abysmal work by Hyundai. Very shameful!

@MKE.  Some random thoughts which may help troubleshoot your problem.  You said: I have tried all the things suggested by the local brains trust.  Did they cover any of the following items below.  (Please excuse that Items 1~4 cover the bleedin’ obvious, but I had to ask. 😊)

1.   Did you carry out your oil level test to gauge consumption with the engine always cold or always hot (for consistency/accuracy)?

2.   Any evidence of oil weep around the engine top and bottom, or in between, or on any undertray?

3.   Has your radiator coolant level increased at all?  Does the coolant feel okay to the touch i.e. not unusually slippery or smelly; or bubbles in the coolant when idling or revving.

4.   Is smoke coming out of the exhaust.  If so, what colour?  Does the volume of smoke change when accelerating?

5.   Has the engine been properly tested with a reliable compression gauge?  If so, what were the numbers for each cylinder?

6.   Has the engine been properly tested with a reliable vacuum gauge?  If so, what was the reading (gauge needle static or wavering)?

7.   Has the engine been properly tested with a reliable cylinder leakage gauge?   If so, what were the percentages (%) for each cylinder?

8.   Has the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PVC) system been checked?

9.   Has the engine’s oil pressure system been tested with a reliable pressure gauge?  If so, what were the results (at idle, or at a specified rpm)?

Can you provide any links to web sites discussing this class action.  Sounds interesting.

@MKE.  Please disregard Question 1 in my post above.  I mistakenly thought your excessive oil consumption was a fairly recent event and you had only done maybe one or two checks before calling for help. 

On re-reading your post it seems this has been a long ongoing problem so it's unlikely the temperature of the oil at the time of taking oil levels over a long period could have given you wrong results.  Apologies.

I have thought about trading it in but I want to investigate my options first. I could not sell it privately and sleep at night.  No smoke!  Apparently modern synthetic oils and the CAT are stopping exhaust smoke.

5,6,7,8 and 9 are on the agenda.  The car is booked into my local trusted mechanic in a couple of weeks.
PCV will be the first thing checked.  I considered taking of the rocker cover and  checking the PCV myself but I do not have the equipment to do the other tests so, I will leave it all to them.  I will post again if anything comes to light.

The proceedings are action no. NSD 131 of 2023 in the Federal Court of Australia.  ‍

The action is being funded by Woodsford, a leading global ESG, access to justice and litigation finance business. The applicant is represented by law firm Johnson Winter Slattery.

A separate but similar proceeding has also been commenced against Kia.

Also, thanks for the link about the Hyundai class action.  Interesting.  I'd guess that this matter may have been raised previously on this forum, but I can't remember it (not unusual these days :(.).

Please update the forum about the results of the various tests your mechanic carried out which, hopefully, identified the issue with your engine.

@MKE.  Did your mechanic identify and sort out the problem?  I'd also be interested (curious) to know which of the tests he did (my post 16 May) and their results, if he provided them.
