Does anybody have any ideas as to where you can fit a Sat Van in an i30 ???

Vans are difficult to fit inside, Navs you have a choice, there are lots of threads on the subject and its mostly down to preference, model and how much you want to pay fro a bracket or mount.

I made an adaptor for my garmin Nuvi to fit it in the centre of the dash.

Last week I swapped the Audi for an i30 and was pleased to see that the adaptor fitted perfectly

Hi there...

I started out with grand ideas of having the fully integrated package, but after some research and listening to the guys here I decided to settle for a portable. I first tried the tomtom (990 I think) it was so bulky that it just fell off the screen, once to often.

Then one of the brethren on this forum got exercised about Garmin Nuvi so I went to have a look and found one at a sensible price, although I can't recall what that was now, anyhow I invested in one. It's a Nuvi 1490t a slimline jobby which does *not* fall from the screen and does pretty much everything I want, bluetooth to the phone, lane assist, trafic jam warnings and re-routing et al.
I love it.

Hope this is of some use to you.

I tried mine in the centre of the dash (attached to the windscreen) but found it a bit too far away plus I wasn't overly wrapped with it being out there for all to see.
I then placed it in it's current position and find it's within reasonable reach and it's much more discreet. Added bonus is I don't have an ugly cable draped over the dash.
Speaking of the cable, It's just plugged into the power socket, then tucked away under the dash with it emerging out of the finger hole of the fuse cover...reasonably close to the Sat Nav unit. (as seen in 2nd pic)

Would it perhaps be possible to tap into something in the fuse box? With the device located just above it, it would be an easy install.

I choose the same location, this seemed to work the best.

That looks interesting rustinutz... My nuvi 1490t has an aerial thing attached to the power lead and I don't see one on this device????

Or am I missing something very obvious here, I do miss stuff these days,

age related idiocy I'm afraid...

It would be nice tho to have it semi permanent i.e. the power lead wired in and not trailing all over the place. I'd probably pay the Hyundai guys to do it just to preserve the warranty, let me know if ya give it a go.

That was my first thought but having looked I haven't seen any obvious spot to tap in to.....also the fuse panel is set right back in and I found it near impossible to pull a fuse let alone do anything else.

I noticed that too....Also the power cable I'm currently using doesn't have that oblong thingy (excuse the tech speak

) either so it will be interesting to see if I still get the traffic reports etc...

I'll let you know the next time I go to the big smoke....

) I have my GPS mounted exactly the same and it works a treat. Nice and neat & nice and discreet. I also find it very easy to take off and put it back on the windscreen which I have to do whenever I use my fold out sun protector.

There seems to be a growing trend around these parts, particularly in the conurbation of Manchester where I live, where the mere existence of a visible satvan holder is enough to attract thieves. We see so many passenger side windows smashed as the crooks believe the glove compartment is concealing the satvan unit. Even suction marks on the glass is all the "proof" some robbers need

can some one who has the Garmin 1490t tell me is it has an active dock? As in it turns on by automatically with the ignition. And turns off again when you turn the car off. And does the bluetooth work any good?

I have the 1390T (Identical but 4.3 instead of 5inch) and yes it switches on and off with the ignition... Not sure how good the bluetooth is though (Garmin are good quality so I would expect it to be o/k) I have bluetooth built in to my stereo...

I have a 1490t and to answer your question, yes, the blue tooth works fine for me. Except, it ain't loading the full phone book just now. I have to caution you tho, that this could, and probably is, MY fault. I have updated the firmware and should probably tell the phone to forget the link and also the Nuvi to forget it as well and start from scratch, but, ya know how it is, INERTIA is my middle name, and I haven't got round to doing it.

However, I can assure you that when it was fresh outa the box it worked just fine, phone book and all, I made to obligatory call to my daughter and asked her ring me back, as one does, and it worked just as promised.

I did this today.

Used a fuse tap and this cable

Took a few minutes to install and I only have the 10 cm of cable running from the fuse box to the gps visible.

That is the same place I'm going to put mine - I've been searching the internet for the best suited holder for my iPhone (I run my GPS through it).
I prefer discreet as well as ease of use.
I'll use an extension cable for the iPod/AUX connection so I can also charge it as well as play my music from it, and use it to make/receive calls from using the BT handsfree.
Hopefully I can get a cable to work as I've heard alot of those aftermarket cables have some issues.
I've got a genuine cable but it's too short to run to the dash....

I couldn't stand having it hooked to the windshield near the mirror and have a cable dangling down - see so many units hooked up this way. Must be a distraction surely.

I use this. Might suit your needs Clackerz. Just run an aux cable from the kit to the input for the stereo. Can be done quite discreetly.

I'd never heard of these " fuse taps" until you mentioned them, brian....
Managed to get one on ebay so will give it a try when it turns up...Thanks for the heads up!
