Fuel level sensor

I have a problem with 2015 GD 1,6 CRDi. When the fuel level gets down to the point where the trip computer indicates around 320 miles to an empty tank, the display goes to indicate 0 miles to empty, and the bar graph on the display shows no bars. I presume this is a fault with the level sensor. I don't know if the reading returns if the fuel level is allowed to fall to a lower level. If the sensor was something like a potentiometer with a sliding contact I'd expect there was a dead spot on the track where the wiper was losing contact, but I don't know what type of sensor it is.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and how easy was it to repair or replace the sensor? I'm guessing there are no problems continuing to drive the car as long as you make a mental note of how far the fuel tank is away from being empty/

First thing I would do is check the resistance at the fuel sensor under the back seats when the car is full of fuel then say every 100 miles till it stops showing on the gauge to rule out any other issue like wiring or dashboard problem.

I don't suppose you happen to know how the resistance of the sensor varies from full to empty, as I do have a variable resistance box I could connect in place of the sensor. Then I could very the resistance and check if the dashboard reads correctly. I presume the sensor is maximum resistance at empty, so a broken wire will default to read empty rather than full.

No I don't, sorry, I think values would not be that important, I think you will see a difference when you get the level of no readout on the dashboard. I'm just guessing but that's how I would go about diagnosing it, maybe there are some resistance values online, I would imagine the same sort of level sensor is used on lots of cars.

It's the car my partner uses every day, and as I have an identical car, maybe I'll swap the sensors over, Then I can take my time to investigate because I don't need to go out and work every day., nor will I let it run out of fuel I suspect there's a dead spot on the track because it does work fine down to about half-full. What I don't know is if the reading would come back again as the tank continues to empty, once the wiper gets past the dead spot. I have come across these on crane joysticks where if you hit a certain point the hoist comes back to a creep speed.
