My sons g/f has a 2009 auto 2.0L petrol which I think the timing chain was replaced late last year. The mechanic didn’t mention any oil leak so I suspect it was caused by something they did. It has done about 180,000km?

Oil leak is substantial; dipstick was dry in January this year and they topped it up and said they can’t fine the problem. Last week the dipstick was dry again and I just topped up with over 1L of oil. No smoke and it’s running fine. I found oil pooled in a cavity (possibly in the block) at the right side of the engine - below the half-circle towards the rear of the engine, just near the spark plug leads.  I suspect the rocker cover seal (gasket goo?) wasn’t properly applied or the bolts aren’t tight enough, and hence the massive leak.

I think the mechanic should be liable for repairing /re-doing the rocker cover/gasket goo and she’s just been lucky the engine didn’t go bang with so little oil over summer.

I've attached a photo of the location in my wife's i30CW (same engine) which has only a slight leak.

Anyone got any thoughts

2.0l 2009 i believe is a timing belt. I know our 2010 2.0l is a belt. What oil spec is being used?

No idea what her mechanic put in.  I assume they used whatever was in the user manual.  I topped it up with 5W30.
