Hey all, I have a 2011 Hyundai i30 2.0 petrol(110,000KMs). I took my car in for its yearly service this morning, and the mechanic called me with a list of issues and a huge bill.

Engine mount - $420

Timing belt kit - $1100

Spark plug - $250

Rear shocks - $650

Window repair - $650 (my window is stuck and is not going up or down)

Rear tyre - $170

Do you think these charges are reasonable? Looking at around $3700 bill.

That’s an expensive engine mount.
Timing belt needs doing at 110,000 but sounds a bit expensive. Maybe someone can quote some figures.
Rear shocks. Unless evidence of leaking or the car has had a VERY hard life, let them go.

I believe getting at the window actuators is pretty difficult.

Tyre price probably OK but I’d want a premium brand for that price.

Is this your regular mechanic? Or a Hyundai dealership?

Thanks for your response. It's a new mechanic since my old mechanic closed shop.

Don't know Australian prices but 250 dollars for plugs seems excessive to me as does some of the other prices

OK.

I think I’d be looking for a second opinion.

Do you have any friends who might recommend their mechanic?

Over the ditch i have seen NZD1200-1500 for timing belts for front wheel drive cars before depending on the mechanic and difficulty, they usually include cam and crank seals, water pump, tensioner and a few other items. That said i nearly gagged at the price, and have since done them myself all in a days work.

But yeah all those prices are high end so would pay to shop around.

Aside from the timing belt, everything else on that list is excessive. And the timing belt notably says kit - does the quote include labour on that or is that gunna be charged at the end? If it does have labour, what's the hourly rate?
