I have an '09 slx crdi with the leather wheel, and the leather is starting to peel. I've commented before about the cheap/horrible feel of the so-called leather ( feels plastic to me) steering wheel, but I've now noticed flakes of the black coating on my fingers. It's due for it's 15k service in a few weeks so I'll mention it (and the rattles) to the dealer then.

thats definatly a warranty issue!

is it drying out? if so you could use some...

but i recokon only use that if they DONT replace it, as they might turn around and say "its your fault for putting dubbin on it"

I dont think Dubbin will work, as I'm sure it's a plastic coating of some kind that is failing.
I'll let you all know the result when it's in for a service, and I'll try for a pic before then.

In re-reading your post Jase mine was a little different.. In the Getz the Leather was sort of coming unstuck from the wheel at the joins almost as if the leather was shrinking due to the heat.. (our sun is actually pretty harsh in Tassie - believe it or not)

I think it is partly because of the cleaner, clearer air.. and at one stage because of the hole in the ozone layer being over Tassie and part of Antarctica (although I think it has shrunk a bit now)

It is commonly acknowledged that you can sunburn quicker in Tassie than in some more northly states... :'(

Here's a photo of the leather/plastic peeling off the steering wheel. It is only a very minor complaint on an otherwise fine car. The textured finish ( the bumps ) are wearing away at an alarming rate, with the '10 to 2' hand position now almost smooth.

Is it being caused by your thumb/finger nails?

Lorian, I work in direct contact with the general public, so my fingernails are chewed down through stress, so they didnt cause the wear.  :'(

Worth a shot at a warranty claim then.

Dropped in to the Dealer and showed them the wheel, and they said they'll replace it under warranty when I bring it in for a service in a few weeks. So thank you to Kloster Hyundai in Newcastle for their helpful and friendly service.

Ya see... here is the difference. Fiat cars are suffering this too & dealers are shy of replacingt as Fiat wont fund it under Warranty, Hyundai do, thats why owners are happy with their Hyundai cars!

The steering wheel on my 2008 1.6 Premium i30 petrol is uber smooth with no texture coating though & feels like proper leather :-)

but as I've mentioned before ffoxy,Hyundai only make some of the car parts in their own factory's.the rest are made for them by other company's and if those parts fail they are replaced and sent back to that supplier.

So... do I have this right...
If Hy make the parts we owners complain about, Hy wont replace them unless it's a rock solid case...?

But if a part fails that Hy DONT make they replace them without question?

Pretty sure most mass producers will be out-sourcing parts manufacture, but Fiat quibble over steering wheel & road wheel issues in even the 3rd year Dealer warranty, where poor quality is obvious.

Hi Ffoxy.. Unless they consider something is just wear and tear Hyundai have been excellent with warranty repair/ replacement for most members (including myself - with previous Hyundais) Nothing worth claiming in the 2 and a half year ownership of my i30..

:) Precisely why people gravitate to Hyundai & Kia, as well as a good looking & reliable product!

I noticed it on mine after 15k kilometers & 4 months. I got the steering wheel rim replaced under the warranty.

Pictures taken and sent to Hyundai Uk, just need them to authorise claim, yet another issue dealer is aware of.
