  • Sorry, but my karma just ran over your dogma.
Washing the car today I discovered a small switch near the horn. It is operated by a fixed button under the hood when the hood is closed.

Any ideas what the switch is for???

Sets the alarm off if the car is locked and someone manages to open the bonnet (hood)

Test it works as follows

Sit in car
Remove ignition key from switch unless already done so or is in your hand
lock all doors
Wait 2 minutes for alarm to activate
put hand on bonnet/hood lever and pull to open.

Alarm will sound
to stop use remote to open doors.

I take it you left the window open so that you could reach in and release the bonnet without unlocking the car again??

That then raises the next obvious question, what was the point in locking the car with the window open, you only have to reach in and unlock the door with the button if you are a tea-leaf on the lookout surely

You still need to unlock it to release the bonnet catch, then the alarm is disarmed

On mine the locks are DEADLOCKS and can't be opened by moving the lever.

The only way to open the door is with the remote or by using a key in the key lock.

Not the lever, the door lock button on the armrest.

It would happen on my old car too if I forgot to close the air vents. It was fine spray setting of the ultasonic detectors. No need to worry about that on the i30 unless you have the optional Thatcham cat2 alarm upgrade (not many of us have this I suspect).

Ok this is my update

Whilst out this pm sitting in the car I removed the key from the ignition switch.

Locked all doors with remote.

Could not open door as the deadlocks had activated.

Door would not open by pressing the switch on arm rest.

Conclusion

Once my car is locked via the remote the doors will not open by pulling the door lever or by pressing the switch on the arm rest.
So even if window is open the only way into the car would be to crawl thro' the window

Cool, thanks for trying that out.

Conclusion - 2i30's has the longest arms you have ever seen, cos he can release the bonnet through the drivers window without unlocking the car

my car is rhd so the bonnet catch is on the rh side next to your rh knee. i can easily reach through the open drivers window and pull the bonnet catch.  is the UK i30 bonnet catch on the lh side of the car, mine isn't.  :P
