Now I've heard what sounds like a metalic noise from the rear off side.

It only appears to be there when I start from stopped.

It sounds as if something is sliding in a holder or bracket as I accelerate away.

I thought something was rolling around the boot but checked for loose items but none so ruled this out.

Also checked exhaust fitting to make sure no loose bits.  Again all sound.

Any ideas anyone?.

Could it be something that's become detached in the door?

Try swinging the rear o/s passenger door open/close (but don't let it slam or open fully) - see if anything sounds loose.

Can't think of anything else

Cheers - Tried but no loose fittings etc.

Going to the Garage on Thursday to get the new remote so I'll mention while I'm there.

Check that all seatbelts not geting used are fully retracted. If a belt gets a little kink  it stops it from retracting fully and not being taught. The meatal clip then slides to and fro and causes a very similar noise to which you describe.

Yeah. An unused passenger seat belt can sound like that against the "B" pillar.
Easy test. Clip it into place across the seat (with or without passenger) and try driving off.

Good thought but the length of time Lester has had the car it would have happened to him before this you would think..

Ok today at lunchtime it was dry so I was able to get a good look under the car.

When I moved the exhaust back and forward the noise was there.

It appears to be coming from an area between the rear box and front.

Sounds as if it was to do with the rubber things/brackets that hold the exhaust to the car.

As I couldn't get under I'll ask the garage to take a look at it when they programme my new key tomorrow.

Ok I've had it sorted.

I/you/we all got it wrong.

Under the car the exhaust is in a recess until it get just in front of the petrol tank and it bend to the right to go around it.

There is a metal bar which goes across the gap and is held to the car body by 2 bolts.

This bar doesn't hold anything in place and doesn't seem to be of any importance.
(Looked at a few of Russ picture to see if I could spot a picture with it but on the ones I looked at this bar is not there)

This had been twisted up and was catching on the exhaust.

I've taken if off knocked it straight and replaced.  Took all of 10 minutes.

I remember hearing a load bang last Monday on my way to work, still dark, from under the car but put it down to running over a few pot holes, which by the way there are so many now I seem to be weaving all over the road.

So another result.

I've been looking thro' SM's photo's for a picture of the bar that was bent and the only one I have come across is in the third and fourth pictures down in this group.

Third picture is better.

My eyes are a bit blurry this evening (been a long week) - but looks to me like a chassis stiffiner.

I agree with you. Definitely a chassis brace/stiffener. Helps to prevent chassis flexing etc.

Pip
Or is it a safety net to catch the pipe should it come off? I was thinking, like they do for RWD tailshafts. Doesn't look substantial enough to be a brace/stiffener.

Looking at pictures posted by Russ of the underside of our Korean firiends cars this picture was the only one I came across after looked at 100's of the bar in place.

After taking it off and making it straight to me it just seems to be there to fill in 2 bolt holes .

It's not a strong bar.
