Hi Guys...   (got a 4 inch crack in my windscreen today coming from the passenger side "A" pillar) did about 250kms and had three small stones hit the screen during the trip think it was the last one that did the damage .. fortunately I can make one windscreen claim a year without having to pay the excess...

Unlucky Dazzler..

Most of us here in the UK can get a small crack repaired free of charge, if indeed it is reperable. Minimum £50 excess otherwise.

I hope I never get a crack that can't be repaired, with the auto-wiper sensor and athermic glass.

Hi Shambles..

They can fix star chips over here if you put some film over them to keep the dirt and moisture out but a crack from the edge, no way. I had to pay about $30 extra premium to get the no excess windscreen policy but I guess it's well worth it now...

Wife reckons I drive too close to the car in front but I've had 4 or 5 busted windscreens in 30+ years driving and most have been caused by vehicles coming towards me...

P.S. I had a 1993 Nissan Bluebird SSS with head up display projected on to the screen like a fighter plane and when it was a few months old I checked how much a new windscreen was (a genuine one, was around A$2000)

Thanks camerooney... appreciate the sympathy...

I was on the main drag between Devonport and Launceston.. a national highway! Seems to be a fair bit of loose stones around at the moment. It was raining and on was sitting on about 110km (by the GPS) about 3 or 4 car lengths behind a Rodeo or similar ute...

Geez!
You were driving on a better road than I've ever driven on...hehe!

The Princes Highway NSW (Gerringong all the way down to Eden) is pretty shocking.
Starts to get nice and smooth when you're around Eden (heading into Vic), but the stretch between Nowra to Batemans Bay is pretty bad. Potholes everywhere.

I'm surprised I havent had a cracked windscreen in the laser.

I'd say you were just extremely unlucky!
That and the rain wouldn't have helped.

You should have just got around the ute
:P

It probably had gravel stuck in its tyres or something.

Reckon some members would be surprised at the quality of our roads particularly in the north of our state (Political point scoring I would suspect)... 8-)

Its funny,

I have had no luck with windscreens. I have been driving about 23 years and only ever had one flat tyre but have had to replace windsreens maybe six times.
The last time was on our previous car, a 2005 Hyundai Sonata. It was repaced under warranty. It was faulty, it had a wave in it right in the drivers view which distorted vision. It didnt bother me much but the wife claimed it gave her a headache, I though it was me that did that!
Anyway, the service centre at my dealership were good about it and within a week we had a new windscreen.  :D

When I get mine replaced, hope they do a neat job.

When I was a kid my stepdad had a new car dealership with Workshop, Bodyworks etc...I used to watch them change windscreens and it was a messy job. (lots of black gunk) Hopefully it's a more streamlined process now...

Hi Shambles,

Sorry M8 ... reckon it's a conspiracy by BMW 1 series owners....Jealous we got a car that's just as good for a lot less money...

When I get a chance I'll check availability of i30 screen in Tassie (our population is less than one hundredth of yours so I won't hold my breath!)

When I parked up this morning the crack was around 4 inches. At lunch, without having moved the car, it's size had doubled.

Just about to leave work for a 40+ mile drive home. Hope it doesn't cave in, otherwise where will I fix my satnav to? Plus, I'll get wet when I use the spray washers

Dazz, did you get any indication that there is a replacement windscreen in Tassie? Or even in Oz? Or have you got a fix date?

Up to now I have a small chip in screen on passenger side.

Autoglass looked at it and said leave as OK. BUT..........

Fingers crossed it doesn't go into a split.

When I had the Accent I had to wait 8 weeks for them to ship a new screen from Korea.

Shambles - If Daz can get one in Tassie then it may be quicker to get him to ship it over than wait for HY UK to source one.

Sorry to hear that about the , no replacement windows. that was what i was thinking, i was thinking if the window breaks it will be hard to find a replacement as the i30 is still thin on the ground so who would stock them. bit of a worry.

I've had an 8" crack in the ute's windscreen for a few months, but easy to get replacement for that and cheap. here in Sydney there are lots of mobile windscreen replacement companys that do good fast replacements on the road.

Shambles, i'll get my friend at work to phone a glass company here in Sydney today ( friday ) and when i get back to the pc i'll let you know. this guy has had two new windscreens in the past few weeks, so i'll get him to check. but air frieght is expencive, surface is cheaper but you never know were the boats will go first and can take months.
look at it on the bright side mate. there was a time when cars did not have seat belts, and the front windscreen used safty glass as in an accident they thought it was better to have non laminated front windscreen.
when they got hit they just shattered you could not see through them at all. i've had to drive long distance with no front windscreen at all was windy and cold!

Thanks for the offer John, but I want my insurance company (and Autoglass) to deal with it all. If they can get me a new screen within 4 weeks I'll be happy enough. I've already sounded out a courtesy car in case I need one so driving won't be a problem if it takes more than a month to get, or if my screen goes tits up in the next few days.

Thx for the offer mate :)

Thanks Lakes

Got details from the dealer:

Part No: 861102L661
Price:    £440 plus fitting (AUD900 ?)

Mine has electronic heater element for the wipers, tactile rain sensor and athermic central layer, so that might be why it's a bit costlier.

Glad I'm not paying for this.

Dazz have you booked yours in yet?

Hey Dazz that must mean spares as well as cars have been shipped to Oz, including windscreens.

Doesn't seem like that happens over here. Well not for my windscreen anyway.

Do they have 1 in stock?
Did they indicate delivery time??

Anyway how's it held out today with all the rain we've had?

At least cost wise you'll only need to pay excess and not the full £££.

Daz
what would the excess be for 2+ claim?

Eye30,

The crack hasn't crept at all today which is good considering Blackpool got 2000 years worth of rain in one day today

I should be taking it in in 7-10 days according to AutoGlass; they've ordered it via a non-local dealership who are arranging shipping. They've also ordered a spare set of trims and a training guide, as none of their fitters have worked on an i30 before (the trims are in case something goes wrong taking mine off).

My excess is £60. I'd like to know what Dazz's is too
