Has anyone had an issue with their rear quarter panel glass?

The one on the drivers side of my i30 has what appears to be a sort of rainbow effect showing and no amount of cleaning will remove it so I can only assume it's actually in the glass.
I have my windows tinted and so at first assumed that this was somehow causing it. Needless to say I took it in and complained and they took one glance at it and said it isn't the tint as the tint doesn't extend into the corners of the window.
As it had a couple of bubbles in the tint anyhow, he then peeled the tint off and he was right, the rainbow effect was still there.

Anyhow, to cut a long story short, I took it in to my local Hyundai Dealer yesterday and after having a good look he said he'd make some enquiries.

Here's hoping Hyundai come to the party.....  :undecided:

Here's a pic of the window....If you ignore the reflection of the fern for the moment, you should be able to see the markings I was referring to.....

Hi Russ.. I can see it quite clearly but not sure it would worry me being it is only in that rear quarter window?

Be interested to see if anyone else has noticed it (never mentioned before) and if it would worry them  :winker:

It's pretty noticeable, Daz, more so in the flesh..... :fum:

Are these windows laminated? because it's as if there's moisture between 2 layers......  :undecided:

On my i30 I had started to see a little of this on the rear screen, just above that channel that holds on to the water and had assumed it was the water retention having an effect on the black colouration in the window.  It did not however extend into the clear glass of the screen.  I think that the windows are laminated and that the natural expansion and compression of the glasses by temperature do start to have an effect on the black sections...................

Thanks Brian, that's interesting..... :)

Daz...I'd noticed it ages ago, sometime after the windows were tinted. I then wrongly assumed the window just needed a good clean.
When I eventually did clean it, it had no effect whatsoever. I then assumed it must have had something to do with the tint so I figured I'd just put up with it until after summer was over and things had quietened down, and then I'd simply get it fixed under the tint warranty.
As I've mentioned, the problem wasn't the tint....  :undecided:

Not sure about the root cause, but I think it's about the "light" which we can see or cannot see. I'm wondering if you can always see the rainbow effect ? Or not everytime ?
My sunglass has the filter effect, when I wear it, I see almost all the windows of cars (most of them have tint) on the street just like what your pic shows. When I take off my sunglass, I see nothing on those windows.
Also, sometimes when I look at the sky with my sunglass, I see some colors which I cannot see without the sunglass.

Yes you are quite right in complaining that would annoy me too
good luck i hope you get it sorted

If the glass is laminated, it is probably distortion in the plastic sheet bteween the two sheets of glass.

In that case, it's supposed to be a faulty glass, they should replace a new one for you.

If you press on the glass, does the rainbow seem to shift?

It could be what's called "Brewsters Fringes" (an effect created when light passes through two panes of glass of the same thickness, the resulting light refraction becoming visible as a rainbow effect).

Not to be confused with "brewers droop"... :whistler:

That's probably a "reflection" on Rusty's relationship with the dealer.  :winker:

My guess is that the glass is toughened - not laminated.

I once visited Pilkingtons and saw the process - the glass panels are heated by a matrix of high temperature burners which change the "hardness" of the glass in a pattern. If the glass breaks - it breaks into small pieces rather than with jagged or sharp edges.

The pattern in toughened glass can often be seen through high quality polarised glasses.

I think you are seeing the result of a faulty manufacturing process.
