Clutch squeak mystery

Hi it's nice to be back after a quiet few months as you can see from the avatar. Still loving the i30 although a recent visit to the dealer has left me perplexed. Took her in to get aircon successfully fixed but also mentioned a squeaky clutch pedal and a knocking sound over bumpy ground. They traced the squeak to the gearbox and maybe a pivot, but would need further investigation. They cannot tell me if it is covered under warranty until they have already stripped the gearbox incurring a minimum £350 charge. Likewise the knocking sound which is excess play in the offside drop link, may or may not be covered but will cost £93 if not. The dilemma is do I stick or twist, gambling at the Hyundai dealer could cost £0 to £500, another garage might cost less but would not do it under warranty if covered. Or just leave the squeaks and turn the radio up ??!

They also did a health check and happily the brake pads, discs, exhaust etc are all fine coming up to 3 years old 28k miles, although I never realised one of the headlights is out.

Hi Leon.. Can you try another dealer or are they too far away?.. Their "maybe" attitude is unacceptable in my book.. If another dealer tries the same thing I would write to Hyundai UK! I would live with the squeak and if the gearbox lets go THAT should be covered under the warranty

The knock could actually be the steering rack which is definitely a warranty fix (another reason to try an alternative dealer...)

P.S. don't tell they you have already tried another..

I also have a problem with damn clutch pedal squeeking !! Started to happen like 3 weeks ago.
I tried to lubricate it behing the pedal but it seems that it doesn't work.
Gotta go to a mechanic.

Okay few things..

First the "knocking" sound.. I think that's a known issue, usually it's fixed under warranty, by changing so called stabilizers (they are called here like that..) and it's not that expensive and must be (should) be done under warranty. I've had them replaced on my previous i30 at around 40-50k km I think. They also admitted, that the ones that "come with the car" aren't as good quality as the ones, that replace them at the service. And really..after they've replaced them then, I haven had any problems till the day I sold it (50-105k km). I'm pretty sure that's the issue with your i30 and you could mention them to check it out once more.. I might be wrong, but almost all i30's in Slovenia had it replaced, also many i30 in other countries, from what I've seen. As I've said, under warranty of course.

EDIT: Just noticed the first post was posted in May

Second.. The squeaking clutch pedal. My uncle has the same problem on his 2009 Kia Ceed 1.4 petrol. Started at around 60k km, now he has around 85 k km and it's still not fixed. Why? Well, he mentioned it at the 75k km service, they even checked it and said that they are really not into fixing it..

Why? They said, it would take a lot of time, to get to that part, which must be replaced/fixed and it would cost a lot, but they would do it under warranty.. And they were like: "if it doesn't bother you that much, then please don't fix it". He was like: "I will fix it, but not at your place and not yet, because I have no time". I'm persuading him to buy the Elantra or i30 anyways

Anyways..one day I told him that we should check it out ourselves and try to locate it. So he sat in the car, pressing the clutch to make it squeak and I opened the hood and started looking for the problematical part. And I think I found it.... I'll try to find some picture of the part, that I think, makes the sound.. And yes, it is a bit of the problem, to get physically to it and to try fixing it, without removing some other things..

I'll check for the pic, if I don't find it, I will take a pic of his engine - the squeak making part below/next to/between and post it here in 5-6 hours from now

Yes I agree, you shouldn't have this annoying problem. But just think how happy you will be once it is gone. Cheer up, always look at the bright side of life.

Probably find out it's a dodgy knee joint in your left leg

Don't joke, I had a Left Hip replacement that did the same thing. Couldn't get in to oil it!. Been fixed now, under warranty. (this is true)

Ogi: Tell us what they've told you. It's interesting and seems to be happening only on some 1.4 petrol engines. As I've mentioned, my uncle has the same problem on his Kia Ceed 1.4 petrol MY2009 (which is basically the same as i30 as we know), whereas, I had no such problems on my previous i30 (1.6 CRDi MY08), which did 105k km without 1 squeak like that.

I wasn't in touch with uncle yesterday, so didn't manage to take the pic of the problematical part.

I scheduled to visit them at Tuesday, the 1st of November. I met a mechanic there who told me that its probably a lever that pushes..... (Accim, please translate the word LEŽAJ, to je valjda neka poluga koja gura lezaj, valjda nesto u cilindru ako sam dobro razumeo) ... i hope they will fix it...

Mine 1.4 Petrol does that squeaky noise too. They examined it at the dealer in and they told me they had to remove the whole clutch system and fix it by putting some oil...grease...or something like this. They also told me it's under warranty. Unfortunately i told them it's not Czech model with 5 years warranty, but the 3 years one (which had just expired). So... they said it would cost me 230€..... I left it squeaking

Okay I think it's what they told my uncle too and what I've seen in his Ceed and the same MadCornY is talking about.

If I would try to translate it, I would say they are talking about some "lever", which pushes the bearing.. And something about the cylinder.. I think I know what you are talking about - and I think that's exactly what I found to be the problem in my uncles Ceed, but don't know how to translate.

Try doing this. Open the hood of the car and tell someone to keep pressing the clutch. You'll see this lever/bar (poluga), which is moving when you are pressing the clutch. There is some "rubber joint" there (okay the rubber is around the joint) and that "joint" is the part that is making the squeak.. That's how it looks to me and that is what I think they are talking about. And you can see, that it does take some effort to get that part removed and fixed/changed..

its the thrust bearing fork,to get to the thrust bearing inside the bell housing the gearbox definitely needs to come out.

another place it could squeak is on the pivot point of the thrust bearing fork,but I'm not 100% sure its on the outside or inside of the bell housing.

Does it squeak with the engine running?
And does it continue to squeak while you hold the pedal depressed or does it just squeak as you push it down?
If it's consistent it'll be the thrust bearing. If it only happens while you're pushing the pedal down it'll be the pivot on the lever which you should be able to poke a bit of grease onto.
But don't spray anything in there or it'll end up on the clutch plate and you'll have a slipping clutch.

It WAS happening only as i pushed the pedal down and released it. Seems that today they "fixed" it. Actually, they only lubricated something and now there is no squeek and the pedal goes much smoother when i push it. We will see about the squeek thing later...

It is not fixed !!!!!! It squeeks again !!! One day it was ok but it started again today !!! Tomorrow morning i am going again to that so called dealer. They don't know shit !!!

a bit late sorry,but i had a look at where the pivot point is,but its inside the bellhousing.

can you get some one to push the clutch in and out while you search for the squeak?

it may be easier to find that way.

I was at the dealer yesterday morning, again. I had an argue with them as they told me that THERE IS NO MALFUNCTION so they won't change any part. They lubricated again the same thing and told me if it starts squeeking again to come and they will "open the clutch" and lubricate all but they need whole day for it. They also told me that they are giving their best to help me even that it is not covered by guarantee (!!!) becouse in the warranty paper it sais that "sounds that have no influence on the operation of the vehicle are not considered malfunction and won't be covered by the guarantee" . They also said something like "it happens on some car" .

At this point, the squeeking stopped or i can hear it very hardly but i think it will come back. Then i will schedule to open the clutch. They kind of explained me what squeeks but i can't translate it, its too complicated, some levers or something... or bars... what word suits better i dont know...
