BMW  Series One, 116d sport, diesel engine,

power  =114 BHP, Torque =192 Ft/lbs.

i30 1600 cc 115  Diesel,  114 BHP,  Torque + 192 Ft/lbs.

Are these similar diesel engines?

I don't think Hyundai, make this diesel engine, it's probably made by a "Third party."

I wonder if you're right... take a look:
http://www.mibz.com/2454-fail-pay-attention-to-detail-hyundai-ad-with-a-bmw-engine.html
Is it possible that the advertisers could have been so idiots to make such a mistake?
Or maybe Hyundai hired more ex-bmw engineers apart from their chief designer :whistler:

The matter is: who is that third party? (if there is one)

Probably doesn't help in anyway but my last Ford focus had a 1.6 diesel unit which was a PSA engine used in all the French makes and BMW mini to name but a few.

Shame everyone doesnt use the same engine, would make it easier for spares and service parts.

From what I've read, the i30 crdi diesel engine is all Hyundai's own work.... :goodjob:

I know the actual car was designed by Hyundai's German R & D department but was the engine designed there too?  :undecided:

BTW, the engine is built by Hyundai in Ulsan, South Korea....  :goodjob:

The new, German-designed chain-cam 1.6 diesel is pleasant, quite lively and also reasonably relaxed on the motorway, geared to around 30mph per 1,000rpm in 5th.

Good ol' Honest John, with a name like that how could we not believe what he says?

And knowing the engine is apparently German designed has just turned me off my i30 a tad.... :-\ :undecided:

!.6 and 2.0 litre diesel engines for Hyundai cars sold in Europe are made at the Zilma Slovakia factory next door to the KIA assembly Plant.

This factory produced 243,000 engines last year. Of these, roughly 100,000 were shipped just across the border to the Nosovice Czech Republic Hyundai assembly plant where the i30's for the Europe market are built.

So, do BMW produce a similar diesel 1600cc engine,  as well as Hyundai?

The BMW 1.6 litre diesels are not at all the same - they have different bores, strokes, valvegear arrangement and turbos. However - the sump plugs just might be similar.

So that's the European market accounted for, do you know what country our Aussie i30 diesel engines are coming from ? I know Hyundai build diesel engines at their Ulsan factory so am assuming there.... :undecided:

Going back to my original   post :

Both Hyundai & BMW  are 1600cc diesel engines, both have the same   BHP  and the same torque!

I find it difficult  to imagine that the above engines are produced by two companies. It seems a waist of resources ?

Info:

The original diesel engines in Hyundi cars were manufactured by Detroit Diesels, a subsidiary of General Motors, in the U.S.A.

Hyundai have now developed their own range of car engines which they manufacture themselves.

The developed engines are based on the original engines built by Detroit Diesels.
