This is an important survey, this is where I decided NOT to buy a Mercedes A-Class because of the bad reviews! The only problems I have seen on this site are very minor compared to the ones I have read about other makes.

Who wants to be first to add a review for an i30?
Preferably someone who has had their car for 3 months or more. Once the first review is on, its easier for others to add them.

I have had mine over three months, have drive just over 12,000k.
No Problems so i am happy.
at first, when i first started to drive it i was not to sure if i liked the way it steered and handled, and i did not like the wide view mirrors both sides. but now i am used to it i like the wide view mirrors and i like the steering and handling just fine.
If a car gives me no problems and it gets good economy and has enough Torque to excellerate up hills, has air cond & CC and is comfortable, does not use oil or need topping up with water, starts first go idles ok runs the same all the time. if a car does all this for me. I'm happy. the i30 CRDi SX does all this.
So i'm happy with if.
But if you want looks and image, go somewhere else, it's just the plane truth. I see people that say they think it's a BMW 1 Series, well wake up! I don't think it is.
If i wanted a BMW i would just buy a BMW simple fact. as i'm not into looking at Car's, I'm a driver, and i'm sure if i drove a BMW i would not think it drove like an i30.
I just wanted to get the facts straight.

Considering our i30 SLX has now travelled it’s first 5,000 km it’s time to ‘blow out the cobwebs’ and let the engine loosen, imbed the piston rings and stroke and start to work the bottom end a little... today was a great day weather-wise, and with a 250km trip on some lovely winding country roads coming up, today’s the day to see what this puppy can do!

The morning started with a 150km print on some beaut winding roads that included a 5km mountain climb and some great bends and straights.

Is the i30 a drivers car?

At first I kinda thought not. The steering was pretty but the engine and brakes seemed only fair for a 2tr ‘light-weight’ – but what a difference 5,000 kilometres makes! The engine has definitely discovered a new power band lacking when new. The brakes have bedded nicely and there’s a level of overall smoothness to the car clearly lacking at the showroom (I don’t know if Hyundai de-tune i30’s prior to the 5K service or not although a lot of manufacturers do this to prevent over-wear in new cars. As the car is clearly running smoother now so I suspect this is the case).

OK… on the road –



150kph in 5th at 4,000 rpm with lights and air-cond operating and the engine is purring like our cat after a good feed. Still plenty of acceleration in top at 160kph, so drop back to 4th and it’s an easy hum at 5,200 rpm suggesting plenty more to play with (I didn’t go over 160 kph – too many roos around).

The hill climb in top (5th) was easy and held 110kph all the way up. Kick back to 4th and plenty of acceleration for overtaking even on the steepest inclines. The handling was a joy; brakes good but not great, although this could well be a reflection of the horrible Hankook tyres. I’ll be replacing them as soon as possible!



The seating is good and manages to secure the driver comfortably during high-speed cornering. Unfortunately the dash is horrible – far too dark to be easily visible when wearing sun-glasses. The pedal location seems workable for quick gear changes and I didn’t notice any real fatigue after a fairly tough drive.

Hey Don, just thought i would say, when you have fly by wire like the i30 has, they can sometimes download updates for the throtle.
my V8 Ute is also fly by wire i got some updates put in when it was run in and it went a lot harder.
i don't mind the tyres yours should be better than mine i think. i played with tyre pressure and i have never had the tyres loose traction unless i wanted them too.
the petrol should be faster as it has more KW, just the diesel will get there faster as it has the TQ.
i have tested on the track, and an increase in TQ always shows me quicker times, and increase in power shows me faster speeds but not always as quick by the clock.
but i never bought the i30 for performance, just for good economy.

A lot of people spend their entire driving lives driving in the low-end of engine RPM. City traffic, 50 kph speed limits, traffic lights and traffic jams etc. etc. In these environments (probably in most environments nowadays) the low-end torque provided by diesel engines offers a lot of advantages - especially in cars with an automatic gearbox.

But... My wife and I spend our lives at the other end of the rpm spectrum and we both hate driving auto's. Between us we drive on average 1,000 km a week just getting to and from work. A lot more than this when travelling. We rarely drive beneath 100 kph except when passing through a tiny town or two. We avoid cities wherever possible (the old saying: The best thing about Sydney is seeing it in the rear-view mirror as your heading west over the blue mountains  

I didn't buy an i30 for economy - I bought it because it's (hopefully) reliable, dependable, solid enough to bounce a small roo or wombat if necessary, comfortable and fun to drive. If it fails any of these I'll probably sell it.

PS - I did catch the external URL for posting surveys, but I'm not really into that sort of thing - too impersonal - hopefully we can just post our impressions and chat here.

"Still believe I made the right choice buying an i30 diesel SLX"

What things have gone wrong with the car? No faults with car in the first 6 months of ownership.

General comments?
Has the torque of a large four cylinder or small six.

Amazingly economical.

Solid feel on the road with well weighted steering and a well appointed interior.

Excellent value for money with few weaknesses and many strengths.

don, i love Sydney m8. but i love all of Australia the same there is not one place in Australia i don't like. but there is still a lot for me to see yet.
in Sydney we are not limited to those speeds m8, and a driver that can handle Sydney traffic and get through it doing 80+ KPH can handle anything. i was averaging 70,000k a year with my V8 ute. i drive in the country a lot m8 and Drive both Auto and man have driven old Mack trucks with Two Gear Box's two gear sticks. my i30 is man only because that gets best mileage. i don't like low pwered cars with auto's as they need to shift back a lot. the i30 man in Sydney traffic is great as you don't even need to use the throtle to start in first or second even on a hill. i showed my friend, she drives a new Mazda3 MPS 6 Speed it goes ok too, she tried to do same as i did in the i30 diesel and her turbo petrol just died it needs the revs up.
Also don most people in Sydney now use the motor ways and if you don't sit on 120kph on some of them in peak hour you will have someone riding up your arse .
i drove a lot of miles in USA too and was easy as i'm used to traffic.

Was going to say that too eye, i just turn on the park light and its easy to see, but in the bush i always take my GPS and use the speedo on that.

Hiya Lakes - you would be talking about an old Mack MaxiTorqe  - they didn't really have two gearboxes, although they did have two levers. One was for high-low range and the other was the 'normal' gearshift pattern. I used to do a fair bit of work on an old B Model for a bloke in QLD. Dog of a truck, but he loved it .[/quote]
Last time I was on a Sydney motorway I was still only doing about 50 kph... along with (it seemed) about a million other people  

IMO all of this just highlights how we all have different needs and wants. Explains why car manufactuers make such a wide range of models and options. It's great to have choice; it's also great to accept that just becauise I like something, doesn't mean everyone else has to... We are all different and all unique.

I do drive with lights on for safety, but still found the dash very hard to read with polarizing type (Cancer Council approved) sunglasses. Tried this morning with 'normal' (non polarizing) sunglasses and it is a lot clearer.  One thing I will be doing this weekend is fitting a graduating anti-glare strip to the inside top of the windscreen. My wife has also complained about the glare when driving making the dash difficult to see, so will see if this helps at all...

In Tassie I don't think it's legal to put any tinting on the windscreen at all these days (even just a strip..)

The pic of our car above gives an indication of tinting laws in NSW - it's as dark as legally allowable.
