The vehicle i bought last week is just coming up to a year old.  It was serviced before  i picked it up and the servicing book was stamped for the 1st year service.

I noticed in my paperwork that for the corrosion guarantee you have to have another book stamped at certain intervals to say it has been inspected.  I rang Hyundai (local dealer) and they told me there is a £25 charge for them to just look at it and stamp the book to state there is no corrosion so far.  Does that sound right?  I assume they probably just do it when servicing the car and charge people who do not use them for servicing.  I just thought £25 for not very much seemed a bit steep.

I'm sure mine was done, twice now?, as part of the service at no extra cost.

Look at the back of the book and you'll find details of this and spaces to confirm checked.

Hi There...  I am a bit puzzled (I'm an old git) do they want 25 quid to REPLACE the book, or, to do the inspection ?????

They want £25 to do the inspection because I explained the car had already been serviced by The Car People less than a week ago whom i bought the car from.  I have got the servicing book which was stamped last week and also the corrsion guarantee book which also needs stamping.

Is £25 too much for a Hyundai technician to come out and spend time looking at your car in order to ensure the corrosion warranty is kept in force?  You may be correct in that a quick visual inspection is " not very much", but remember the hourly rate you and I pay for a dealership mechanic at any garage is somewhere in the region of £100/h.  I

Surely you are not expecting the dealership who did not sell you the car and have not serviced the car to do that work for free?

I think £25 is very reasonable :undecided:

I absolutely agree. I've had 2 inspections so far and I believe each took around 30 minutes, including a period on the hoist

I've not checked the T&C's but surely the servicing garage should have done the inspection as part of the service.

ps
check to make sure they have used the correct parts and oils otherwise this may have an affect on the warranty.

Hmmm as a new owner I have yet to take mine for inspection (due October). I must admit that I thought a Free 10 year warranty might indeed be free ... I take your point about the non-selling dealership but at the same time this is the first I have heard of a £25 fee and over 10 years that would be ermmm errrrr somewhere in the region of £250. It's not exactly headlining on any of the adverts ;)

As I don't have a local dealer, so would have to travel and wait - the paint warranty is looking less enticing than it did.

But.....  BUT.... your check will be carried out at the time of the service at the Hyundai garage where it is carried out.  Our new friend PAID ANOTHER garage to do his service and now wants Hyundai to work for FREE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess you would have to phone and speak to Hyundai and explain your predicament I shall be interested to hear what they say.

Very true, but I live almost next door to a cracking independent garage (ABG Motorsport) who have been very good to me over the years and they will be doing the servicing. That puts me in a similar position, not sure it is worth the hassle, travel & expense just to have someone check for extra paint jobs for them ;) It feels like putting the fox in charge of the hen house  :P

Few inaccuracies here.

1. I bought the car, when i picked it up, the service book was stamped, i did not pay them for a service or request one.  Usually I would use the dealer for this but seems a bit silly if it was serviced the week previous.  If it had not already been serviced it would have gone in the dealers this week to be done as it would have been due.  The dilemma came about when i read i also needed a seperate inspection for the corrosion warranty which must be carried out by Hyundai.

2. I haven't said i think an inspection should be free if the car is not serviced by Hyundai.  I asked whether £25 seems steep for what I was guessing is probably a 2 min look at the car and a stamp in the book.  Others have now answered confirming that  is not the case which was the question i was asking.   To suggest I said it should be free simply is not true.

3. I was asking the question so I can weigh up whether it is worth paying (admittedly one off because Hyundai will service it moving forward) for something i am unlikely to ever claim against anyway plus it was not a requirement with my previous Hyundai (albeit that was some years ago).

Just had a gander at T&C's in service book.

To be checked by "authorised Hyundai Dealer"

So inde not acceptable unless authorised by Hy

As you have had a Hy car before was it the same dealer plus are you on good terms with them?

I'm not sure how long the inspection takes but if you went in to speak to them they may consider a goodwill check as a previous customer.

So if ABG are serviving the car, then they'll inspect for corrosion right. Why are Hy the only people who can do paint inspections

The old dealer (in Oldham) closed down.  I would have just been a bit miffed if they charged £25 for a 2 min job but it seems that is not the case.   I don't mind at all paying for fair work, and as everyone seems to be saying the charge is reasonable for what they do,  my question has therefore effectively been answered.

Thanks all.

I bought the Accent from a garage facing Oldham college which closed a few months later than the warranty went to a dealership in Springhead and that closed a few years back.  The name escapes me though.

I moved to Prestwich so my local dealership now is not too far away.

Ah right, I use the one on Bury New Rd which is quite convenient for me.  Also I take the loan car when I have a service so it's no trouble in that sense. :goodjob:

As some of you know I used to be a service manager at a VW/Skoda dealer some years ago.

Before 2002 Skoda also charged costumers for a annual corrosion check, but in 2002 a new EU law stated that if the manufacturer demands an annual inspection for you to keep a warranty, they are not allowed to charge you for that inspection.

That is regardless of the service being done at the authorised dealer or anywhere else. (or not at all)

However, if it's called an insurance, then they are allowed to charge you for the inspection.

I found this on the Hy UK website -

5 Years of Annual Vehicle Healthchecks
For 5 years, in addition to your main annual service, your Hyundai dealer will perform a check on key elements of car care across a range of areas which you can see from our checksheet.

On or near the date of the anniversary of your purchase, just contact any Hyundai dealer or authorised repairer who will be happy to arrange a free of charge healthcheck. The dealer will check your vehicle against the items on the checksheet and provide you with feedback, which will help you maintain your Hyundai and enjoy trouble-free motoring.

For greatest convenience, you may wish to time the booking of this free of charge healthcheck with your annual service.

I remember the salesman saying the check was free ... but didn't want to embarrass anyone by saying it without backup ;)

The vehicle health checks are free but this is different to the corrosion checks.  Hyundai have confimed to me that they make a charge for this if it is not done with the servicing.  However, i took it into a dealership in Rochdale (was just passing) expecting to pay £25 and they did it for nothing anyway.  In fairness they did say there should be a charge but can see it was not my fault the car was serviced already before i bought it.

Receiving that level of customer service from them must now put them at the top of the list when the car is due its service next year.
