I have an i30 CW SLX with 16" wheels that i fitted chains to go to Mt Hotham a few weeks ago. However they rubbed up against the spring cup on the strut. While not doing any real damage they did scratch and dint the spring cups. It also meant I could only drive at 20 to 40 km as it was very noisy and clattery. sounding dreadful Has anyone used their i30 CW SLX with snow chains, and how did they go? Is their a solution for this or do Hyundai's need a certain snow chain. These were rentals but of the newer type and the correct size for the tyres.

Dazz, Google the route of the Monaro Highway.
It runs right through all the snow country. :happydance:

We are driving from Lakes Entrance to Glen Rowan via that area in October (so I might see it first hand)  :whistler:

Did you stop after 20 metres or so of moving the car to re-tighten the chains? They really loosen up a lot after the cars has been driven a bit

I recommend winter tyres myself rather than chains.  Mine are Michelin Alpin A4's on 15" rims (car has 16" rims otherwise).   The winter wheels are left on for about 3 months (in UK) whilst temperature is below about 7 or 8 degrees.  Make an astonishing difference - my car (despite being auto) goes everywhere & has never been pushed or dug out as yet.

winter tyres making an amazing difference in cold conditions, but in the snowy regions of Australia, you only really see snow driving heading up to the ski fields, and as soon as the snow reaches 'heavy sleet' snow chains become required if you're in a 2WD vehicle, or they'll send you back down the mountain.

Is every road over there called Monaro, how many are there  :faint:

Do like the Monaro you're referring to Dazz, very nice scenery, but a bit on the cold side sometimes.

Pretty sure there's only one Monaro Highway, Phil.....

The road Daz is referring to, which runs from Bairnsdale to Wangaratta, is actually called the Great Alpine Road.....

Pip
I've only driven with chains a few times and years ago but my take was that they ought to be tight on the tyres.  I had them so tight I drove home on the tar a couple of hundred kays. They were a little noisey but not worth stopping to take off.

If you had them tight I reckon your problem would not have existed.

OMG Pip I think over here Insurance companies would have a purple fit... for driving on non-standard wheels / tyres, and the Highways Agency would bounce up and down if we drove with chains on a normal road fearing we may damage the pot-holed rabbit runs even more.

Yeah, pretty used to using and fitting chains, did try to pull them up tight but reached limit of being able to be pull them up.
Maybe should try a smaller size, but they were the recommended size. Would like to hear from someone who has actually used an i30SLX with chains

Thanks guys, Monaro, because I had one, one of the great Australian made cars, they even had to remake it. In Australia for 2WD CARS YOU MUST FIT CHAINS in the snow country roads when required, if bad enough 4WD CARS must also fit chains. It is how we deal with snow covered roads.
If anyone has used chains on the i30 SLX (16" wheels) I would like to know how you went
regards
Kev
