Hi Everyone...

Encountar who has done a lot of work adding members to the Google Map section has unfortunately been swapped with other commitments. (thanks for your efforts so far Petey)

So... we now require a volunteer to take over his duties (He will be happy to provide access and instructions to someone who can update the map on a regular basis - maybe weekly?)

I (for one) would be happy to help the person to identify locations of those regular members who are not yet shown on the map.

I guess first genuine offer gets the job! Does that sound fair?

On that note, can you fly over the north/south poles?I see most planes travel around the world but don't hear anything about them flying over the poles. Is there any location where flying over the poles would be faster than flying around the horizontal axis??

It is possible to fly over the poles in the real world, however the flight sim series restricts the budding flyer as scenery stops at about 80 degrees.

In the real world, most trans-Atlantic and Pacific flights, do not straight line as due to the curvature of the earth this would be longer so for instance a flight to New York from London actually curves past Iceland and Greenland to reduce the distance travelled and therefore fuel used, time required etc....

I'm trying to get my head around that concept. They fly in an arc to avoid flying in an arc...

Yup

The arc around the centre of the Earth is longer than the arc 10 degrees higher or lower than the equator which is again longer than another 10 degrees higher or lower than that, so the route from a-b is plotted as an arc of least distance.

Note how we start at N55 but as soon as the flight starts you are heading in a North Westerly direction such that a flight to New York from England UK actually flies over Scotland.

Think we are a bit off topic .. but that's clear as mud to me (and some other non aviators..i'd imagine)

Take a ball and measure round the centre with a piece of string.

Move up the ball from the centre and you will need less string to measure round the circumference, simple as that.

The quickest round the world tour would be at the poles, you could simply walk round them and you have by definition circum-navigated the earth!!

Yeah I understand that but that is still assuming you are going in a straight line horizontally if not vertically.

The way I understood your explanation I imagined for example if you were going from say Sydney Australia to Perth Australia it would be quicker and shorter to say fly over Adelaide (roughly) instead of going directly as the crow flies (due to the curvature of the earth)

That is correct Darryl, a flight from Sydney to Perth is routed just to the North of Adelaide and via Mount Hope.

Remember maps are flat, draw a straight line on it then curve it into the shape of the earth and you automatically get an arc.  Now this arc may just have become a longer distance than you need to fly so the plan is altered to reduce the distance if possible.  For the Atlantic crossings the routes are given a specific name, they are called NAT or North Atlantic Transitions.
It's about compromise, you can get the shortest distance but this may not be suitable due to flying over large water masses so you must compromise a route to keep you closer to land but still keeping the distance to a minimum.

Most flights which you would see going over Iceland would be to or from the Americas and Canada from European destinations.

Asian flights from Europe go the other way and Asian flights from the Americas tend to be trans pacific.

I would like to fly over Iceland sometime, and Greenland, I flew once over Faroe Islands and Norway and it was nice, beautiful mountains and landscape, I assume the same about Scotland
