I got my tint done today and here is the result.
I'm happy with it - cost $300.  :D

That was my choice actually.
A lot of cars come into Australia from Japan and South Korea now with no tint on the front windows and dark limo (privacy) tint on the rears so a lot of people here who get tint done put darker tint on the rear side & back windows and that is what I have done.
Hyundai i40 wagons for example, have very dark tint ex factory on the rear side windows & the back window for the Australian market.
I went for 35 on the fronts and 20 everywhere else.
In reality, there is very little difference between the two.

This may seem a dumb question - but I have never had a car tinted.

Do they have to remove the door cards etc to get the tint to cover all the glass including where it goes into the seals - or does it only cover the visible glass area?

Some places don't remove the door cards, but most reputable places do, so they can get the tint down below the rubbers.
This place did.

No, I didn't know you could get that.

And Alan, not as far as I'm aware, but I'll make some inquiries for you and if it's available, I'll find out the purchase & postage costs to the U.K. for you.  ;)

I sometimes see a focus station wagon in our area with what appears to be mirrors in the rear side and back windows. I saw it on a supermarket car park some time back and it is impossible to see into the back of the car. I now recognise it must be some sort of mirror film on the windows.

If so - would that not be more effective at cutting out the sun than a coloured tint?

Yes it would, but it's illegal on cars AFAIK.

I wondered about that when the Princess Di tragedy unfolded. The story goes that the speeding was to escape photographers on motorbikes. Some of the mirror film would have made their pursuit a useless endeavour.  :'(

Reflective tint is illegal over here.
You still see a few cars with it, but they're asking for a defect notice.

A lot of cars are coming in here from Japan and Korea with privacy rear and side rear windows which is basically like "limo" tint in that it's very dark and affords that privacy.
I don't know how they get around the local laws that don't allow such dark tint but they obviously do somehow.  :undecided:
I don't like really dark tint on the front windows because a part of driving is being able to gauge other drivers' reactions and responses and it's impossible if you can't see them.
Sometimes you just don't know if they've seen you because their tint is too dark, plus, if you wave someone out of a driveway as a courtesy gesture, similarly, you can't see if they've seen you or acknowledged you.

It's the old state vs federal thing. If they come off the boat and get their compliance plates with the 20% tint on the rear windows then your ok. If you do the same thing after market, your playing in your states laws, here in Qld 35% is the darkest legal.

I was thinking of doing the same thing on the wife's car 35% on the front windows and 20% everywhere else. Though I am a bit worried that this will defect the car, and should it get in a prang an assessor may use this to wipe the claim (especially since they do new for old replacement for 4 years....)

I will give the insurance mob a call on Monday, their verdict will probably be my decision. Either way I'll be getting mine done for $260 cash  :happydance:

If you ring the insurance company they will have to tell you not to do it.
I think they'd be pushing it to null a claim based on your window tint though, unless the tint was a contributing factor such as not seeing another car or pedestrian when reversing, say at night time.
I actually have a bit of an issue with this because (and I've mentioned this before) you see so many police cars getting around with illegal tint, it's unbelievable.
Now, I know the protocols, and it is possible for certain sections of the police department to apply for and be granted exemption from the regulations when called for and I fully support that.
There is no doubt that some police cars in covert areas need dark tint, but I would bet London to a brick that the majority do not have that approval.  :TutTut:
I'm not in the habit of having a go at police (of course  ;)) but I do have a bit of an issue with this. They should be setting the example IMO.
Still, it's no defence if you get caught..........

You must still have mining money over there. If it's not on the car when they bought it, your not getting it here in QLD (unless it is proven to add to the resale, then you'll get it quick smart).

Back to the tint, the nice people at the insurance company may not have grounds to deny your claim, but they can tie you up in so much red tape, you will be claiming for rust should you win.

Just keep your warranty or receipt or whatever you were given related to the tint. (maybe it is listed in your purchase contract)

In the unlikely event someone threatens to fine you you would have comeback from the dealer  :undecided:
