Has any body ever questioned the cost of OIL and Fuel FILTER replacements on a Hyundai i30 CRDI.
Well I have and the service Manager in question told me a lot of hogwash.
The dealers price for an oil filter is around $30.00 plus. Fuel filter is $124.00.
I have bought Korean fuel filters for $27.00 and oil filters for $13.00
Now I have some good news. Log on to : www.sydneyfilters.com.au
This is not not an advertiser. I have recently bought some oil filters for $15 made in Korea.
The fuel filters are available also at a reasonable price.
I hope this does help. I do love my i30 CRDI but due to this high service charge. I don't know what I am going to buy next.
I would not buy Japanese, the kill our Whales. My motto is Buy Korean or if you can afford European.
I wish you all a healthy happy new Year.
Regards from Kayak. :)

G'day mate.

There not called dealers because their a charity. I used SFS for my last major service, the major service pack (oil/air/diesel) filter pack is excellent value.

Service centre people use that BS because most people buy it. Ask them why you can get a genuine diesel filter from the UK for around $50. Someone here asked Hyundai and got a lot of corporate mumbo jumbo.

The new cars have fixed price servicing, which shows the old pricing scheme was a complete rip off. From memory the I30 diesel is  $289 a service. Which, given there are 2 minor and 1 major service within their 3 year time frame is still too much, but better than what they wanted.

Personally I would buy the Hyundai, and get it serviced elsewhere. As you have correctly identified, there are far more budget friendly ways to keep the car in top shape.

I can't recall how long the fixed price servicing goes for, but it's not long.
Maybe 60,000 kms but I may be wrong.

The service guy at the dealership I got my GD i30 diesel from was kind enough to give me the uncapped service charges:

15,000km $353.14
30,000km $597.69
45,000km $405.78
60,000km $597.69
75,000km $327.38

My car has the fleet warranty, hence these service costs. Prices subject to change. Prices may differ state to state, etc.

I'm obviously not going to want to spend that much on services.

Wait until you get to the 90,000 km service. Then they'll really rip you off.
That is when I changed to a reputable local non-Hyundai mechanical workshop.

What's different at 90k? I thought it was another major?

It's not just in OZ Hyundai is very costly.

The few times I've needed some parts and asked at the local Hyundai dealer, they have charged horrible prices.

For example glow plugs. Hy wanted 50 AUD a piece, my local sparepart supplier wanted 18 AUD a piece. Could propably get it even cheaper on the www..

I'm also surprised that you OZ guys only have 15.000 km/1 year between services, when we can have 30.000 km/2 year.
That's also 1 way to drag the money out of your pockets, IMO.

I don't think the conditions i OZ can justify those serviceintervals, compared to the EU intervals. We even have the DPF's to wear harder on the oil.

I think it's a shame that they have this; now you have bought a cheap car, so now we want to ruin you when you need to by spareparts or have your car serviced.

I would love to buy all my parts at the local dealer, but with those prices that will not happen.

Those service prices are crazy aren't they .. A quick calculation shows they total nearly $2200 for 5 services to 75,000 whereas my 5 fixed price services to 75,000 kms on the Hybrid are 5 x $130 = $650. I know Hyundai are now doing fixed price servicing as well but their prices are still too high..

We will continue to use a "friendly" independent on the CW  :happydance: (due for the 2nd service this month, 2 year anniversary and under 17,000 kms on the clock)

Those prices are staggeringly high, even comparing the first three services to the three capped services that you get in Hyundai's capped service program.
Especially when you look at the diesel service guide and compare the 15k & 30k services which are not all that much different to warrant another $200+.
With that price difference you would be forgiven for thinking a timing belt was being replaced, and gold dust & fairy eggs being used to lubricate the engine.

It's just another incentive to have cars serviced elsewhere, or failing that, supplying ones own parts.

And of course if you don't service at Hyundai you don't get the map updates on Elite & Premium.

The 90k service was just extraordinarily expensive and the service dept at JH couldn't tell me why.
All I could get out of them when pushed was, "All the car brands we sell have major services at 90,000 kms."
That is when I went elsewhere and got it done by the book for half the price.

@db007,

That's what I don't get, they ended up loosing out completely because of ridiculous pricing. How does that work

It's so negative because

- you would be insulted that they would try to rip you off without a valid explanation of cost.
- you would be wary in the future.
- you wouldn't willing to choose to go back there.
- may not wish to deal with that dealer or vehicle brand in the future.

I'm no marketing expert, but that just shouldn't be allowed.  :disapp:

Due to numerous stuff ups on the dealers behalf on the Wife's new FD. The 15000 service will cost me exactly $0.

Best value Hyundai dealer service. Still, it saves me about $140 which is half of what Hyundai want to charge ($289). Was thinking I might use them for the 30k but them I did some rough calculations and I'll still come in at $230 allowing for snake bite. $60 is $60.

Why change the oil between services?  The 2010/2011 CRDI has a 20,000mile service interval which most private users will not achieve.  Modern oils are quite capable of exceeding even that mileage.

But even so, 5 litres of  C3 engine oil is about £35 and a genuine oil  filter is  £15 = £50 if you DIY.

Yep...just off today to Sydney Filters to get my filter pack @ $60 the set, fuel, oil and air...
Then to get the Oil...Mobile 1  0W-40..

Either I will get my local guy to do it all or get him to to the rest and stamp the book.
The point made about the keeping of actual receipts last week was a good one... especially if we are doing some of the work ourselves or via a local mechanic...

BTW, has any of you  CRDI owners HAD to change the belts as yet and at what distance?

Same goes for brake fluid... are people changing that as per the schedule in the book ?

Cheers

I think I was quoted $450 for the 30,000 klm service.  At that price I decided not to get it done.  I changed the oil myself and put a new air filter in, but the filter probably didn't need replacing.  The brake fluid has not yet been replaced; brakes still work.

AS you can see, I skipped at least one scheduled service during the 5 year warranty.  It has not cost me, as the warranty has now expired (6 Dec 2012) and the car runs fine.

The only services I have had done by Hyundai were at 1,000, 15,000 and 45,000 klm.  At the 45,000 klm service the workshop manager rang to tell me that I should not be driving the car as the fuel filter had not been changed, but I put that off until 58,130 klm.  The fuel filter change cost me $182.15.

After the 45,000 klm service I noticed that they had not even adjusted the hand brake, despite it being the first thing they should have noticed when they got into the car and despite the invoice saying "Checked parking brake, adjusted if applicable".

While I'm at it, the 15,000 k service cost $250.00 in Oct 2008 (Mantello, Roxburgh Park) and the 45,000 k service cost $300.90 in May 2010 (Makin & Luby, Heidelberg Heights).

I haven't had to change any belts yet, not have I changed the brake fluid.

Yesterday, an idiot with no concept regarding right of way provided me with an opportunity to give them a good test and they still work fine (so does the driver). Though my commute is fairly brake friendly.

Chaps, if I can just point out that brake fluid changing is as important as engine oil changing IMO.

Brake fluid has a natural tendency to absorb moisture, so over time, the moisture content in your brake fluid will increase. The master cylinder is vented to allow for disk pad wear, this is where it gets in. It has been known for moisture to permeate through metal, over time. This is one reason why MOST brake fluid is sold in plastic containers.

Old FE Holden's had metal brake master cylinder reservoirs and rust was a common problem there.

If the moisture content builds up too high, there is a real possibility of brake fluid boiling which will create vapour locks and probable brake failure.

The other problem moisture creates is very tiny bubbles of rust inside cylinder bores, both wheel and master, these bubbles eventually cut the rubber components which can also lead to break failure.

Please change your oil at the prescribed intervals, that's why it's in the service schedule.

I'd like to second that. The repair costs from not changing it out regularly are much greater than the cost of changing it.

My thinking with the brake fluid is that it states clearly in the owners manual that it is to be replaced every 24 monts, and my assumption is when the car goes in for a 24 month/30,000km service that the brake fluid is replaced according to the schedule.

If it is not done, but the log book is stamped and the invoice states that a log book service was completed, and if the brakes fail due to water in the fluid, then it would fall back on the place that serviced the car for not following procedures.

The cost of bleeding the brakes would fall under the price they quote when getting the service.

I cannot find any other service schedule in any books I have for an i30 CRDI.

I have skipped a couple of the scheduled services (but I have changed the oil and filter plenty of times myself) so the brake fluid in my car has not yet been changed.  That was my choice, but I should get it done soon.
