Hi everyone,

I just thought I'd introduce myself. Firstly, I'm so impressed to see so many aussies on here with their i30's!

Anyway, I'm in the market for an FD i30 Diesel Wagon.

I've never owned a diesel car before and have never owned an Automatic car either.

I wouldn't usually go for an Automatic, but I am keen to buy an SLX Wagon with all the extra's- what a hunt that is going to be!

Can anyone tell me if they have had any serious issues with their Automatics transmissions? I plan to keep this car quite a while as it is replacing my Excel with a HUGE 300,000km on the clock and it has been flawless.

I do have an 05 Elantra which is a 2.0 Beta Manual - same as the petrol i30. Excellent motor, but i'm wanting the diesel for its extra torque and efficiency.

Any advise when looking at buying a used Diesel / Auto would be a great help.

Thanks everyone in advance.  :)

Welcome to the forum.  :goodjob2:

The FD cw is a great car and many will say the diesel is the pick, although we have many very happy petrol owners too.

As far as the auto is concerned, there have been a few issues with a small batch of autos but overall the vast majority appear to be trouble-free.

The SLX is certainly well-equipped so enjoy the hunt!

It's great to hear that the Auto is pretty much a trouble free transmission.

I drove an SX i30 Auto Diesel today was impressed! For a little 1.6 it was excellent!

I'm completely sold on the i30, it's just the hunt for one that has not been abused. I'm in no rush to find one but my ideal find would have to be one in Silver.

The only reason I'm being so particular is because I own a 2005 Elantra in black and the time maintaining a black car is crazy. Silver I have found to be a colour that doesnt show swirl marks as much as any other colour. I've very particular on detailing as you can tell.  and the i30 will be in addition to my Elantra.

If I see anything that might suit I'll let you know.
Don't necessarily dismiss cars from interstate either.
I've bought quite a few cars from the east (I'm in Perth).
Transport in your neck of the woods is cheaper than over here too.

I'm hoping I should get something decent around the 18,000 mark? is this being reasonable for a 2009? I'm not at all fussed if it is newer either.

Welcome elantraelite..

The Manual is more bullet proof than the auto. If a good Manual SX Wagon comes up please check it out.

If it has the "Cruise pack" like my wife's car it gets Cruise and Driving lights. The Upholstery in the SX CW is the same as what the SLX gets (better than the SX hatch) and you still get the indicator mirrors..

Some nice alloys and tint and you wouldn't know the difference   :whistler: :happydance:

I agree with what Dazz said - a 6 speed manual cw is a top car.

Here's another new auto though, in silver but still over budget.

Thanks for all your help, yes certainly a bit over the budget

I'm starting to think Dazzler has sold me on an SX Diesel with the cruise pack, all the other gizzmo's I guess you can live without and a transmission must be a priority over the shiny extras

I had an SLX diesel manual hatch (FD) and have recently switched to a base model GD Active diesel manual and honestly, once you have it, you don't miss the extras.

An FD cw in diesel with the 6 speed is a fantastic combination.

The new model cw is out shortly too but obviously with be $$$ more to buy.

Going for an SX Manual you will probably be able to go a year newer with lower mileage and you should get about 20% economy  :goodjob2: :goodjob:

You're right.
They lied.

A car dealer? Who would have thought.

There are plenty of SX diesel auto wagons going through the Qfleet auctions. All with 20-40k Though unless you want a holiday that probably doesn't help you.

I just thought I'd add my bias (again) against autos. Everyone knows what they offer over the drudgery of swapping your own gears but they are ridiculously complex with it seems almost impossible technical/mechanical insurmountable obstacles.

The 6 speed hasn't had a chance to fall apart yet but the 4 seems destined to be a dud.

Honestly, these buggers (autos I mean) have been around a long time but continue to fail. Looks like a long term trend to me. :whistler:

Welcome elantraelite,

We have 2 autos and no trouble at all from the trans. You will always find people for & against any idea, so you'll have to make your own choice.

My advice to you would be to try for 2010 or later, as the trans problems have been in the earlier models.

Auto's are complex, but no more so than the engine, it's a sign of the times. Innovative fuel saving ideas are built into these transmissions.

BTW, there are minor problems reported in the manual trans too, difficulty selecting some gears, a thump which is felt rather than heard, just to name a couple (in the current model too).

The manual diesel is fitted with a dual mass flywheel which although completely reliable in the i30's has failed in other brands and is NOT used in an auto vehicle.

And according to much discussion here, the i30 does not and has not used a DMF (except perhaps with the old 2.0 litre diesel engine).

My statement about DMF was based on this thread, particularly Alan's statements, although it appears, still unconfirmed.

I've been googling. There is zero evidence that the 1.6 cdri has a DMF. Either that or it has the best designed one ever made.  I seriously don't want a car with this weakness built in. Lots and lots of failures in all brands (including Hy) and conversion to SMF being done. Looks like a lousy invention to me. :fum:

A lousy expensive invention.

Why is this the world's best kept secret, there must be wrecked manual diesel Hy's around somewhere.
