Cruise control won't engage unless you have touched the brake pedal atleast once since you started the car... could that explain your issue?

I think it actually checks the logic of the cruise control, not the brakes. It wants to ensure that the cruise control receives a brake signal so that it knows to disconnect.

could be I will try it next time ;thank for a number of possible answers ;don,t use the brakes when on cruise control just go up and down with the set and reset unless it gets a bit hairy in the lanes ;;be my undoing one fine day ;;forgot where the brake pedal was ,had to look .bad habit I think not recommended ;;

Work For K & S Freighters,we do all sorts of freight,our yard also has a Quarantine authorised/accredited Wash service,you'll not believe some of the cars I see come through there,little while ago had seven E-Types come through,heap of cool stuff comes through there,most of it comes from the States,England,we had some nice corvettes come through,the best one that had me transfixed was an old two door Cornvertable Caddy,already fully restored
