There is a recent post on the KIA forum by a Ceed owner whose battery keeps running down. The car has keyless entry and he has been told that the problem is being caused by the keyless thingy being left too near the car overnight

kia proceed GT im sorry to say i wish i hadnt - Kia Owners Club Forums

Does this tale sound plausible to you guys with keyless i30's?

I'm just curious - but glad I have an old fashioned key for my car.

How near is too near??

My fob is kept about me at all times, in the house that means that I am always close enough to activate the locks as the car is just outside the front of the house and as we already know the distance our cars and fobs recognise each other is huge!

I have had my keyless i40 since July 2012 and I am still on the original battery, the spare fob is also close enough to be "active" and that one is only used once a year when the car goes in for service.

Sounds to me to be an issue with the car rather than than the fob or its proximity to the car?

I love keyless, keys are just so..........yesterday!

Exactly, lots of homes also have integral garages, with just a cavity wall adjoining the living area.
KIA's letter almost seems an April Fool.
This is interesting, and I also look forward to hearing a satisfactory conclusion.

When my mate got his premium i30, we were looking at it in the driveway and the keyless enter etc was being activated, but moving about 5 metres away calmed everything down again, IIRC.

OK, performed a couple of checks on the i40 for you Alan, Kim cannot open the car using the button on the passenger side even if I am standing with the fob at the drivers door, so proximity to the lock in question is required to activate.  Similarly if I am within 10M of the car the non fob holding person cannot open the boot (the boot can be opened without unlocking the rest of the vehicle like the boot button on the non-keyless fob), I have to stand right beside her at the boot for it to work.

I also left the fob which has my house key attached to it in the lock of the front door less than 5M away and went to the car and could not get access.

Happy for you to share that info on the Kia forum if you feel it would be helpful.

I have keyless entry and start in my Hybrid (I love it too)

I am pretty sure you have to be within about a metre of the doors and boot before it will unlock (unless you press the remote buttons which work from a lot further away)

With the start it doesn't talk to the key until you put your foot on the brake! (in my car anyway)

The Hy/Kia system just needs the key inside the car, it screams at you if you get out with the key in your pocket and the engine running

It needs the clutch depressed to start though, pushing the button without clutch just cycles through OFF, ACC, IGN, OFF, then the info screen comes up with a pic of a foot pushing a pedal and tells you that you need to depress the clutch pedal, thickboy!

Yeah, mine beeps 3 times if I get out with the engine running. Because mine is silent when stopped (mostly) I often hop out and go to lock it and when it won't lock I realise I forgot to turn it off! :-[

From the manual, the smart key needs to be within 28inches of the start button or one of the front door buttons or the rear tail gate handle for it to be active. That would mean that for the keys to be "too close" they would have to be left inside the car.

As stated above, I can't open the i40 unless I am within a couple of metres with the key, if the engine is running however and the fob removed from the vehicle it will sound the alarm system but the engine is not automatically switched off.  The ix35 has a fob holder in the central cubby, the i40 does not have anything, all of the German cars with the system have a slot in the dash to hold the fob, is there a microswitch in there which prevents the engine being started if the fob is not present?

In the original 60's Mini's this was known as: a "Stiletto Start" - mainly in Essex White  :whistler:)

To be fair this is why for my generation and younger, keyless or push-button is "new", we have not seen it until recent years, it's only you oldies that think it is a backward step :p

Given the choice I'd have it every time. I've had it for the last 4 years (no downsides for me)  :victory:

For the record, I really would like it - the "old fashioned" system was to save money; the battery was in the boot......
System is so much better now  :D

I've had starter buttons on two of my previous GTs and I like it.
I had to laugh recently when I read in a classic car magazine that this guy's young daughter was fascinated with wind up windows.
It was a real novelty for her to wind the windows up and down with a handle on his classic car.

Yeah, but you had to put a key in a barrel to then get the push button to work didn't you?

Not a fan of keyless, because I haven't got one.  :)

Keyless entry is a great idea though, but if I was designing the system, I would make it so that the driver inevitably removes the key from their clothing / bag etc the car unlocks due to proximity but the push button won't start the car until the key is located in a secure slide out tray similar to an ash tray mounted in the dash, close the tray and push the button, away you go. To kill the engine, pull out the tray and proximity switches the engine off.

This would do away with key cutting, tumblers in locks etc using a simple coded RFID embedded in the key, no batteries required.

Seems like a lot of rooting around, easier to just stick a key in the ignition if you ask me....

Besides, If I don't have a car key where do I hang all my other keys?  :whistler:

I always like the K.I.S.S principle.....

For those without keyless entry and start..

With my car I have a remote fob (with a key hidden inside it in case of a fob or battery failure)

When I get out of the car I just touch the door handle and it locks (with one beep) I have to lock it with the remote lock button if Trish leaves her handbag in the car with the spare key in it.

When we return to the car if locked by remote then has to be unlocked by remote. If we have locked it by touching the door handle then I just grab the door handle (with key in my pocket) and driver's door only unlocks.

Trish has spare key in her handbag. If she grabs her door handle (passenger side) all the doors unlock.

WAlk to the back of the car with Key in Pocket or key in Trish's handbag (within roughly a metre of the lock) and can open boot by just reaching under the latch (or touching boot button on Remote Fob)

To start the car just touch button on dash with key on your person (or in your pocket)

Once you get used to it, just so easy and convenient!
