Hi Australian Owners,

My i30 is about 800K at the moment, I was wondering do I have to go back to the dealer who sold it to me for the 1000k service?
The reason being is there is another Hyundai dealer who is much closer to where I live.

I'm still to figure out where I'm going to be getting mine serviced. The dealer that my car was sourced from is at least a 90min drive north!

So, I shall be looking for one closer to home to make use of.

From memory there was a voucher stapled inside the cover of the service manual, and I'm fairly sure it was part of the delivery charge, so I'm guessing you will have to take it back to the same dealer.  Check your service book to see if you have a voucher as well.

Any dealer will do it as well as subsequent services or warranty work.  In other words, service is totally independent to the point that ordinary scheduled services don't even need to be done by a dealer at all.

First service is free in Tassie too (pretty sure it would be the same in all states)

Any dealer should be able to do it...

No, there is no voucher.
There is only a per-delivery check certificate.

I took mine back to the dealer I bought it from and they told me the 1,000 km service would take 2 hours(!)
They didn't know I was waiting for it and it took the best part of an hour for them to move the car from the car park into the workshop. From where I was sitting I could see them (there is a window through to the workshop) and from when they got into my car to drive it through to the workshop to when they drove it out and parked it, was four minutes.
They did nothing other than fill out the book. They checked absolutely nothing. I'm glad I wasn't paying for it. Obviously they get paid by Hyundai for that first service but they did absolutely zero to my car and when I questioned it they actually got a bit aggressive.
So guess where my car is not going back to?
I know there was probably not much they could do for its first service, but if they had lifted the bonnet it would have been a bonus.

i'm in melbourne, australia and my first service was done at the dealer i purchased it,dandenong hyundai. i paid $47.50 for oil,oil filter and sump plug gasket, laber was free and i watched the machanic whilst i was out side haveing a smoke,he did as i payed for and also checked all fluid levels and spanner checked about a dozen bolts on under side of car.car was also test driven around block prior to all work being done,[2or3 minute drive]. i dont know if air/fuel mixture or any ecu adjustment was done but the car did feel after service,[1000klm]to have more power.i dont know who did your service but i would complain to head office about your bad service and go to another dealership next time. i was in and out in 45 minutes, the service manager explained what work had been done, and i was on my way.

Yes, I've bought my previous cars from John Hughes and have always been happy with the service, but I bought this one from another dealership but will probably go back to J.H. for servicing, even though you obviously pay a premium for servicing at Hyundai dealerships as opposed to non-franchised car service centres.
I would like to provide my own oil as I would prefer to pay for top quality lubricants, but I need to go back over the threads on this forum to find out which oil would be best for this area.
Where I live it gets down to sub-zero overnight during winter and up to mid 40's celsius in summer so will have to pick the correct diesel oil.

Hi db...

You need to use a fully synthetic for the diesel this list is official but is probably not complete...

I usually use Castrol edge Sport 5w-30 which sells for around a $49.95 on special (Shell Helix Ultra and Mobil 1 are closer to $60 or $70)

So they completed the service book to indicate they've done the 1000km book service but actually did nothing. Isn't that fraud? Haven't they defrauded Hyundai by claiming to have done work they didn't do?

Time to name & shame so other members here can steer clear of these crooks.

I took mine back to John Hughes in Welshpool for its free 1000km service.  I left it there at 10am, and they rang at 12 and said it was ready.  Not sure if they did anything.

Where abouts are you db08?  Your climate sounds like ours.  I'm in Newman.

Not to be difficult Dazz, but this statement might not be strictly correct.  We need to use an oil that meets ACEA B4 if no DPF (as in Oz) or ACEA C3 otherwise.

To meet this, an oil would probably contain a majority of base oil that could be called "synthetic" but there is nothing stopping a manufacturer producing an oil to meet these specs that wasn't synthetic at all.  Having said that I don't know if there are any that do.  :-[  :D

As discussed elsewhere, "fully synthetic" and "synthetic" are marketing terms, without separate definition, that indicates the oil uses a base oil from group iii, iv or v.  Apart from sounding more synthetic than "synthetic", "fully synthetic" means nothing different from "synthetic".  Group iii oil is a mineral derivative and according to my definition, and in all parts of the world other than North America and Australia, would not be called synthetic.  Oils from groups iv and v are synthetic.

Many oils on that list are group iii oils including Castrol Edge Sport 5w30.  This does not make it unsuitable, in fact it's what I have at the moment.

I'm not aware of any semi-synthetics that are recommended for use in our crdi but there could be some...

Maybe you should really find out what a 1st service is and what they do then u wont be so cranky.
1st services is more or less just a check on the vehicle just like the one done before you picked up the vehicle.

Your 1,000km service sounds nice and good thing to do for the car. Even if some services don't check the car that good  :) Are you obligated to take your car to service when it has 1,000 kms or is that your choice?

Here we don't have 1000km service..for diesel the first service is on 20,000 kms, next on 40,000 and so on.. I took my car to service when it had 10,000, so they would at least change oil and oil filter. They say that maybe only 5% of people bring the car to service before 20,000 and that for these engines it is not necessary, but is definitely good for the car to do so.

I am aware it is only a general check but the point is most of us have to re-arrange our day to drop off and collect the car and stress if we go much past the 1000km before we take it in..

The other thing is that some of our members have probably driven a 100kms or more to take the car for its check up and...

What if there is an obvious safety issue that is overlooked because they couldn't be bothered doing their job properly...

Sorry, but I have a very high level of work ethics and expect others to have the same...

Hi, sorry MelWA, haven't been on here for a few days. I live in the Perth hills but being in a valley it gets to sub zero in winter & of course into the 40's in summer.
The car's having its 7500 km service done on Tuesday & I'm supplying the oil, so will have to get it tomorrow. I'm leaning towards Shell but not sure just which one. I would rather pay the extra for premium oil.

Think the only Shell which is suitable for the CRDi is Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 (at nearly $60 for 5 litres) which should be enough because about .3 of a litre stays in the system)

It doesn't matter, I'll buy two, cos the left-overs will be used next time anyway & its 15,000 km service will only be a few weeks away.
I still have to post the pics of the leather & sunroof too, I haven't forgotten, just need to get a new digital camera cos someone (who shall remain nameless) dropped my old one.........

So your going to do another 7000 kms in a couple of weeks

My eldest Daughter has a habit of dropping cameras and stuff so last year I bought her a new one with a nice matching (pink) lanyard.. well you guessed it she thought lanyards were dorky and so didn't use it and had dropped the camera and cracked the back screen within two weeks

Camera dropping must be a female thing.

With the greatest of respect... this statement suggests to me that you haven't put too much research into the oil selection, but enough to know you should use the right (brand ??) oil.

You have two choices as I see it:
1) Rely on the dealer to use the correct oil (and charge appropriately :D) - but check before-hand what it is, and its specification.
2) Buy your own, what ever brand you "lean towards" but ensure it meets ACEA B4 and is either xW30 or xW40 grade.

Most 30's are "thick" (near to the 40 boundary) so a 30 weight will almost certainly be correct for all temperatures but particularly through your winter.

You just can't do this. I put faith in my dealership and they filled with 10/40W s/synth, which I quickly pointed out to them was incorrect. I wouldn't have minded as a one-off but they'd previously done my 1st service and used the  "correct" grade last year

I asked the dealership I bought the car from what oil they used in the diesel and they weren't able to tell me.
I subsequently went into John Hughes service centre and asked them and they weren't sure either. They said it was a bulk oil (of course) they use and thought it was Hyundai's own brand.
I'd actually like to know what oil goes into my car, hence looking to buy my own.
Dazz sent me a link listing some of the oils able to be used with the Crdi which was very useful and I have also googled various websites. As a result of that research, I'm leaning towards Shell and will choose one from the info I have available.
